Discussion

Sources

  • The overview cites the sources of the five campaign pages, where their Talk pages say how each was read, and adds Horowitz (1977, UN Bulletin on Narcotics), the Journal News Online report of 19 September 2022 on the Philippines, Blickman (2017, Transnational Institute) on Morocco, and Russian and Indian press reports (EastRussia, 9 June 2017; PrimaMedia, 20 July 2026; The Arunachal Times, 21 December 2024).
  • The 1979 UN Narcotics Laboratory report on methods of eradication is described from Adams (December 1981 proceedings), who summarises its tables; the report itself was not read.

Places where no herbicide spraying was found

  • Searches for herbicide spraying of cannabis in Thailand, Lebanon, Panama and the wild-cannabis areas of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Tuva found none. In Lebanon the sources describe burning and ploughing; in Panama the State Department (1988) expected manual eradication to suffice; for Thailand the State Department (1988) only planned to urge Asian governments to use herbicides. Thai-language, Hindi and Mongolian press were not searched. These places are therefore not listed in the article.
  • For Jamaica, the government's 1985 refusal of paraquat and its use of backpack sprayers in 1987 are given; the herbicide used in the backpack sprayers is not named in the source.

Morocco

  • Blickman's statement rests on two reports he cites (Saad Alami 2006; Le Braz 2010), which were not read. The photograph's caption names Taounate; its credit date (November 2010) is the photograph's, not a dated spraying, so no date is given.

Not used

  • An undated Lenta.ru feature (2013) saying that cannabis in the Chu valley was once treated with chemicals, with no date, place or chemical.
  • Forum and listicle accounts of "paraquat pot" and claims that the spraying was meant to poison smokers, except as the 1978 press stories that NIDA and Cedillo report.
