Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The slip records plante cultivée dans les montagnes pour sa graine oléagineuse (a plant cultivated in the mountains for its oil seed), at 2,000 m in July, in the district of Tchen-kéou-tin, and gives the name hô mà. The year is not on the sheet, but Farges died in 1912 (Harvard botanist index; Fournier 1932), so the gathering is no later than that. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered before 1912. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from GBIF's cached copy of the holder's image (2,000 pixels wide).

  • Slip (handwritten): 198 / 2,000 juillet / hô mà / plante cultivée dans les montagnes pour sa graine oléagineuse.
  • Museum label (printed): HERB. MUS. PARIS. / Plantes de CHINE. (Su-tchuen oriental.) / District de Tchen-kéou-tin. / M. l'abbé Farges.

Georeferencing

Tchen-kéou-tin is read as Chengkou Ting (城口廳, Wikidata Q113492627), the Qing unit whose name the present Chengkou County of Chongqing carries (Q1070004); the identification rests on the name, and the old unit's extent need not have been exactly the county's. The point 31.89, 108.73 is the middle of Chengkou County's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 2089846, about 3,263 km²), checked to fall inside it. It is an area point for the district, not the place the plant was gathered. The county seat lies at about 750 m by SRTM, some 1,250 m below the slip's 2,000 m, so the plant was taken in the mountains of the district. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 33 km.

Editorial treatment

Classification. The slip records a crop grown for a local use, oil seed, in a named district, and the gathering is no later than 1912.

Elevation and date. 2,000 juillet is read as 2,000 m and July; the unit is not written, and the catalogue gives 2000 m. No year is on the sheet. Farges collected in the district from 1892 and died in 1912, so no date is stored and the title takes (s.d.).

Local name. The local name field takes hô mà from the slip, in the slip's spelling.

Collector. He is Paul Guillaume Farges (1844–1912), a priest of the Missions Étrangères de Paris, who explored north-eastern Szechwan, particulièrement le pauvre district de Tchenkeou (Fournier 1932), sent consignments to the Paris museum from 1892, and was chaplain at the Chongqing hospital from 1903 (Fournier 1932; Harvard botanist index, which gives his Paris holdings as received from 1892 to 1904). The label calls him M. l'abbé Farges; the collector field takes the catalogue's P. G. Farges, and the prose links Paul Guillaume Farges.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives the name only as Cannabis L.; no name is written on the sheet.
