Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label gives the habitat as At grassy slope. and describes a herb 5 feet high, at Kangtin-hsien (Tatsienlu), 8,500 to 9,000 feet, on 22 September 1928. It gives no use, variety or note on cultivation. The plant grew in a natural habitat, with no word of cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the label gives no note on cultivation.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high), in two independent readings.
- Label (printed form, completed by hand): FLORA OF SZECHWAN 中國植物 (stamp 四川) / 3525 / Field No. (blurred) / Date September 22, 1928 / Locality 康定縣 Kangtin-hsien (Tatsienlu) / Altitude 8500-9000 ft. / Habitat At grassy slope. / Habit Herb / Height 5 ft. / Fruit Small, globose / Name Cannabis sativa Linn. / Collector 方文培 W. P. Fang.
- Number. The figure at the top left reads 3525 in both readings. The entry on the field-number line is blurred; one reading gives 3525 there too, the other A52a. The page takes 3525.
- Paris duplicate (P06884300), read from GBIF's cached copy of the holder's image (2,000 pixels wide). Printed form, completed by hand: FLORA OF SZECHUAN / No. 3525 / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Herb 5 ft. high. Alt. 8500–9000 ft. Fruit small, globose. / KANGTIN HSIEN: Tachienlu: At grassy slope. / Under the auspices of the Science Society of China and the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University / Collected by W. P. Fang Sept. 22, 1928. Museum label: HERB. MUS. PARIS. / Arnold Arboretum. / Reçu le 7 Juillet 1931. Its number is clearly 3525, and its date, place, altitude and habitat agree with the Edinburgh label.
- Beijing and Nanjing duplicates, read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's images (PE 00777001, 1,008 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290024, 974 × 1,440 pixels).
- PE 00777001. Printed FLORA OF SZECHWAN form, typed: 3525 / September 22, 1928. / 康定縣 Kangtin hsien (Tatsienlu) / Altitude 8500-9000 ft. / Habitat At grassy slope. / Habit Herb / Height 5 ft. / Fruit Small, globose / Collector 方文培 W. P. Fang. Fan Memorial Institute label: Ed. No. 3525 / Herb. No. 13989 / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Collector W.P.Fang / Loc. Szechuan / Determined by W.W.Smith / Date Sept.22.1928. Tag 3525; SZECHUAN province stamp; stamped number 421637.
- NAS00290024. Printed Flora of China form, completed by hand: Field No. 3525 / Date Sept. 22 '28 / Locality 康定縣, 四川 / Habitat at grassy slope / Habit herb / Height 5 ft. / Fruit small globose / Collector W. P. Fang. Label of the College of Natural Science, National Fourth Chung Shan University, Nanking: Cannabis sativa L. Tag 3525; a HUPEH province stamp and the stamp of the East China station.
The two readings agree.
Georeferencing
The point 30.00, 101.95 is the town of Kangding, OpenStreetMap node 244080901 (30.00026, 101.95456). The Wikidata item for Kangding (Q1013814) carries the alias Tachienlu, and its point, 30.00153, 101.95499, rounds to the same place; SRTM gives 2,810 m there. The label's 8,500 to 9,000 ft is 2,591 to 2,743 m, so the town lies about 70 m above the top of the range, close enough for a point that stands for the county seat the label names. It places the gathering at the town, not at the grassy slope near it. The province field takes Sichuan. An earlier version of this note gave 30.00, 101.96, a slip in rounding Wikidata's point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Elevation. The elevation field takes 2,667 m, the midpoint of the label's 8,500 to 9,000 ft (8,750 ft) converted to metres; the article quotes the range.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's W. P. Fang. The Harvard botanist index gives him as Fang Wen-p'ei (方文培, 1899–1983), collecting in Szechuan in 1928–30, 1932 and 1937–46; H.-L. Li (Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 100, 1948) records his expedition to western Szechuan in 1928 for the Science Society of China, with the financial cooperation of the Arnold Arboretum. The prose links Fang Wen-p'ei, the romanised form of the label's Chinese name.
Paris duplicate. The Paris sheet, P06884300, has the same number, date, place, altitude and habitat as the Edinburgh sheet, and came to Paris from the Arnold Arboretum in 1931. It is one gathering with the Edinburgh sheet, cited in the article and shown in its gallery (CC BY 4.0).
Beijing and Nanjing duplicates. PE 00777001 and NAS00290024 carry the same number, date, place and habitat, and are taken as duplicates of the same gathering. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the labels.
- The Paris catalogue stores the elevation as 8750, the midpoint of the label's range in feet, in a field that holds metres; the range is 2,591 to 2,743 m.
- The Nanjing duplicate carries a HUPEH province stamp; its label names 四川 (Szechwan).
