Discussion

Evidentiary scope

This is an object rather than a field gathering: Kew's catalogue names a donor, and no collector, no date and no place finer than Japan. It documents hemp fibre from Japan, and its label records that hemp was widely grown there and used for thread, rope and summer cloth. The label does not say where in Japan the fibre was grown or when. The object is prepared fibre, so it documents a processing step as well as a plant. The catalogue gives no habitat and no note on how this fibre was grown, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.

Kew publishes no image of this object, and GBIF carries none.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The geography line names only Japan, the country, and nothing within it, so the locality field is empty.

Editorial treatment

No date. The catalogue gives no entry book number, no donor date and no collection date, so the title gives s.d. and the accession carries no date.

The label's claim. That hemp was extensively cultivated in Japan is the label's statement, quoted and attributed to it in the article; the page does not make it in its own voice.

Donor. Kew's donor field reads Oldham Mr, with no initials. The donor is not further identified. The collector field is empty, because Kew's help page uses the donor field for specimens that passed through a second person or institution.

Collection method. The field gives Herbarium specimen, the value for a preserved specimen, as on the other Kew fibre accessions; GBIF publishes the object as a preserved specimen. It is a sample of material, not a pressed sheet.
