Evidentiary scope
This is an object rather than a field gathering: it has a donor and a provenance and no collector, no number and no date. It documents cannabis material in circulation out of South Africa in the late nineteenth century. It shows neither a continuing population nor a living germplasm holding, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.
Because two containers are merged, anything said about this object's contents is said about a mixture. It should not be cited for South African seed alone.
Kew publishes no image of this object. Its record page reads No Image, and none of the seventeen imaged Cannabis objects in the collection is South African. Kew's Economic Botany office states that it has no in-house photographer but can sometimes have objects photographed to order for research and publication.
Georeferencing
The object has no locality finer than the region its geography line names, and no coordinate. None is asserted.
Editorial treatment
The entry book number is not a collection date. Kew's help page defines an Entry Book Number as a number assigned to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition, running in a series each year. This object's number, 75.1884, means it was the seventy-fifth entry of 1884 at Kew. Its collection date field is blank, and the accession carries no date. Kew's Museum Entry Books, which the help page says give donation date, place of origin and collector name, are held in the Economic Botany office and are not digitised; they would settle it.
The entry book number belongs to the Turkish container, not the South African one. The notes attach 75.1884 to the Turkish half and 1879 to the Natal half. Reading 1884 as this accession's date would be wrong twice over: it is an acquisition year, and it is the other container's.
The 1879 on the Natal half is left out of the collection-date field as well, because the label does not say what kind of year it is. It is quoted in the article.
