Discussion

Evidentiary scope

This is an object rather than a field gathering: Kew's catalogue names an exhibition as donor and an entry number, and no collector, no collection date and no place finer than Japan. It documents hemp from Japan that had reached Kew by 1910. Kew names the object Hemp and files it under the use MATERIALS - Fibres; it does not say which part of the plant it is. The catalogue gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.

Kew publishes no image of this object, and GBIF carries none.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The geography line names only Japan, the country, and nothing within it, so the locality field is empty.

Editorial treatment

The entry book number is not a collection date. Kew's help page defines an Entry Book Number as a number assigned to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition, running in a series each year. This object's number, 145.1910, dates its arrival at Kew. The collection date field is blank, and the accession carries no date; the sample was gathered no later than 1910, the limit the title gives.

The donor is an exhibition. Kew's donor field reads Japan-British Exhibition 1910. The catalogue does not say who showed the sample at the exhibition, or where in Japan it was grown. The collector field is empty, because Kew's help page uses the donor field for specimens that passed through a second person or institution.

Five samples, one entry. Kew gives the entry number 145.1910 and the same donor to EBC 43423, 43437, 43440, 43456 and 43462. The catalogue does not say whether they came from one crop or one place, or how they differ. Entry 146.1910, hemp fibre from Korea (EBC 43439), is a separate entry from the same donor.

Collection method. The field gives Herbarium specimen, the value for a preserved specimen, as on the other Kew fibre accessions; GBIF publishes the object as a preserved specimen. It is a sample of material, not a pressed sheet.

Identification. Kew's catalogue page has no identification field. Kew's entry on GBIF gives identifiedBy as Boodle, a surname with no initials, and the identified-by field gives it as GBIF has it. The identifier is not further identified.
