Evidentiary scope

This is an object rather than a field gathering: it has a donor and a provenance and no collector, no number and no date. It documents cannabis material in circulation out of South Africa in the late nineteenth century. It shows neither a continuing population nor a living germplasm holding, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.

Kew publishes no image of this object. Its record page reads No Image, and none of the seventeen imaged Cannabis objects in the collection is South African. Kew's Economic Botany office states that it has no in-house photographer but can sometimes have objects photographed to order for research and publication.

Georeferencing

The object has no locality finer than the region its geography line names, and no coordinate. None is asserted.

Editorial treatment

The entry book number is not a collection date. Kew's help page defines an Entry Book Number as a number assigned to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition, running in a series each year. This object's number, 61.1887, means it was the sixty-first entry of 1887 at Kew. Its collection date field is blank, and the accession carries no date. Kew's Museum Entry Books, which the help page says give donation date, place of origin and collector name, are held in the Economic Botany office and are not digitised; they would settle it.

Source discrepancies

Kew's record page renders the donor notes with the characters x0D and x0A between the two lines. That is a rendering fault for a carriage return and a line feed, confirmed against Kew's own web service, which returns the field cleanly. It is not part of the data and is not transcribed.

The donor number, 3849, is the same figure as Medley Wood's collector number on his 1887 herbarium sheet. Whether that is a coincidence or the same series is not recorded and is not asserted here.
