Identifier

The accession identifier is EAG-KEN-KWA-0120200001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.

  • Holder segment EAG stands for East Africa Genes.
  • Year 2020 is the year of the first dated document that lists the line: the catalogue capture of 30 October 2020, where the line is headed Mombasa 1 Sativa. No source gives a collection year, so the identifier takes the first attested year. It is a lower bound, not a collection date, and the collection date field is empty.
  • Month 01 is the placeholder used when the year comes from first attestation.
  • Province segment. The seller names Kwale. The town lies in Kwale County, so the province field is Kwale and the segment is KWA.
  • Sequence 0001. The only Kwale line.

Line name

The catalogue headed this line Mombasa 1 Sativa in the captures of 30 October 2020 to 24 February 2021, and Kwale Sativa from the capture of 12 April 2022. The text under both headings is the same and still reads "Mombasa 1 sativa grows in Kwale", so it is one line renamed, and one accession. The descriptive name uses the current heading; the old name is entered as a synonym.

Sourcing

The catalogue page Pure African Strains (https://eastafricagenes.blog/pure-african-strains/) was read as it stood on 8 October 2026 and in twelve archived captures from 7 August 2020 to 4 June 2023 (https://web.archive.org/web/*/eastafricagenes.blog/pure-african-strains/). No capture between June 2023 and the current page could be read. The seller's Overgrow advert of 2 December 2024 (https://overgrow.com/t/kwale-sativa-a-tasty-landrace-sativa-from-coastal-kenya/171966/1) was read from a saved copy.

No collector, farmer, collection site or collection date is named.

Typing

  • Classification: Landrace. The seller's advert of 2024 says that the line is usually grown between rows of maize on the small farms of Kwale. The seller also says that it collects its seed on road trips in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania (see East Africa Genes). That ties the line to local farmers. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the seller's account, which names no farm, collection site or date. The account has not been checked against other sources. An earlier version of this note classified the line as Other, on the ground that a seller's account does not establish the class of the source population.
  • Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. No source gives a chain of custody from a growing population to the seed on sale.
  • Accession type is left empty: the sources do not say whether the seed on sale was gathered from growers or reproduced from earlier seed.
  • Traits. The flavours and effects in the article are the seller's words. The catalogue's "Vegetation & Flowering" figure counts vegetative growth and flowering together, so it is reported in the article and not entered as a flowering time.

Georeferencing

The point -4.17, 39.45 is the town of Kwale, OpenStreetMap node 1472171851 (place=town, population 4,200 on the node), in Matuga, Kwale County. It reverse-geocodes to Tsimba Golini ward, Matuga, Kwale, Kenya. OpenStreetMap maps no boundary for the town and few of its buildings, so its extent is taken as that of a small town, about 2 km from the point. Three villages named Kwale lie in Nakuru County; the seller's town in the south, near the coast, is this one. It places the line at the town, not at a farm. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Source discrepancies

  • Distance to the border. The catalogue says Kwale is "on Kenya-Tanzania border". In OpenStreetMap the town is about 61 km from the land border with Tanzania, and 18 km from the coast. The seller's 2024 advert puts it "along the Indian Ocean coastline".

Conservation priority

Not rated. The sources give nothing about the size or status of the source population.
