Discussion
Sources
- Rodríguez Frade (2022), Bulletin de l'Institut français d'archéologie orientale 122, in French: the sector 10 contexts, the microscopy, the catalogue of hemp pieces (Tables 1 and 2) and the conclusions. The article has no DOI; the IFAO site serves it as a PDF.
Dates
- No piece of hemp cloth from the site has a radiocarbon date. The dates in the article are those of the contexts: the pottery and debris of shafts 1023 and 1192, the leather stoles with the cartouche of Osorkon II in tomb 1018, and the pigments of the painted shrouds in tomb 1030. The finds of shaft 1073 could not be dated.
- The paper dates the contexts by dynasty and gives no calendar years. The article does the same.
Identification
- The hemp was identified by polarised-light microscopy of fibre cross-sections only, carried out on site. The author names electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy as methods that could add support. No DNA or chemical test has been published for these pieces.
- The catalogue entries for the two towels (SMDAN 5144, 5145) give no microscopy result; the paper's summary table lists both as hemp.
- The opening table of the paper lists the painted shrouds of tomb 1030 among the hemp pieces; their catalogue entries give the microscopy result as doubtful. The article lists them as doubtful.
Material left out
- The paper's general remarks on hemp in pharaonic Egypt (the word šmšmt in the Pyramid Texts, hemp from the tomb of Akhenaten, cannabis pollen on the mummy of Ramesses II) rest on popular books and a magazine article. They are not repeated in the article. The reading of šmšmt is treated on Egypt.
- The site has no published coordinates for sector 10. The infobox gives a gazetteer position for the necropolis (see Georeferencing).
Georeferencing
The coordinates (25.74, 32.62) are the necropolis as two gazetteers place it; no paper gives a position for sector 10. Wikidata (Q676508) gives 25.7353° N, 32.6206° E, and the centre of OpenStreetMap's outline of the archaeological site (way 90384474) is at 25.7370° N, 32.6215° E, about 0.2 km away. Pleiades (318069073) uses the OpenStreetMap outline. The point marks the necropolis as a whole, not sector 10 within it. Éloise 23:05, 29 October 2026 (+07)
