Page scope
Demoso treats Demoso Township in Kayah State as a cannabis growing area, on the strength of a 2023 report of cannabis grown there under the protection of the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force. It has no parent growing region yet. The town of Demoso is described in the article's setting, not on a page of its own.

Why the area is on the map

  • Frontier Myanmar, 26 April 2023 ("Myanmar cannabis entrepreneurs plant seeds in Thailand"): a cannabis dispensary, first called Moe Ma Kha and then De Culture Cannabis, operated under KNDF protection in rural Demoso Township. Its owner, Ko Win Oo, said that he was encouraging local opium farmers to grow cannabis instead of poppies and that "this season" he was growing the plant on a plot of about 100 acres.
  • No other report read places cannabis growing in Demoso Township or anywhere in Kayah State. The page rests on one interview in one article, and every statement about the growing in the article is given to Win Oo.
  • The Irrawaddy (13 February 2026) and Burma News International (16 December 2024) report the spread of opium poppy in Demoso and the rest of Karenni State after the 2021 coup. They are used for the setting, since Win Oo's remark concerns opium farmers; neither mentions cannabis.

Where the plot is

Frontier Myanmar places the dispensary in rural Demoso Township but does not say where the 100-acre plot lies, and names no village. The page takes the plot to be in or near the township because the farmers Win Oo was urging are "local" to the dispensary; the article states only what he said and does not place the plot itself. A report naming the village or tract of the growing would allow a tighter border.

Growing status

The status is Active: Win Oo spoke of growing cannabis in the 2022–23 season. No later report of growing in the township was found. No source says that it has stopped. The army's retaking of the town of Demoso in August 2025 does not by itself say anything about growing in the rural township. No first or last year is set, since the status is Active.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy drawn on Demoso Township, the unit the source names (OpenStreetMap relation 5996603), about 1,200 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • The proxy may be larger or smaller than the area actually grown: the source gives one plot of about 100 acres (40 ha) and no location for it.
  • The coordinates are those of the town of Demoso (OpenStreetMap).
  • The border is not drawn from accession or news points; the page has none.

Names

  • The state is Kayah State in the Myanmar government's usage and Karenni State in the usage of the resistance (Thansettakij reported in December 2023 that the Karenni State Consultative Council had asked the press to use it); The Irrawaddy and Thai PBS write Karenni, Frontier Myanmar Kayah. The page title follows the government form used for the wiki's other Myanmar states, with Karenni State given in the lead.
  • Frontier Myanmar calls the armed group the "Karenni National Defence Force". The article uses the group's own name, Karenni Nationalities Defence Force, as The Irrawaddy does.
  • Demoso and Hpruso townships were made into a district of their own, Demoso District, in 2022 (Wikipedia's Demoso Township, citing notices of the Ministry of Home Affairs). The infobox gives that district.
  • Thai PBS writes the town ดีมอโซว์.

Sources

  • Frontier Myanmar, 26 April 2023, read in full in the Internet Archive copy of the same day; the live page refused automated requests on 20 October 2026. The byline is "Frontier".
  • The Irrawaddy, 13 February 2026, and Thai PBS, 21 August 2025, read in full on 20 October 2026.
  • Searched on 20 October 2026, with no report of cannabis in Demoso or Kayah State found: English searches for the dispensary's two names, its owner, "first cannabis shop" and Karenni cannabis farms; Burmese-language searches for marijuana growing in Demoso and cannabis shops in Karenni; a Thai-language search; Kantarawaddy Times items reprinted by Burma News International; Myanmar Now; The Irrawaddy; the Karenni State Interim Executive Council's published policies. A High Times feature on cannabis in collapsing states mentions the dispensary in search results; the site refused automated access, so it was not read and is not used.
