Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places cannabis near Tatsien-lu in 1923 and gives nothing more: no altitude, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high).
- Label (printed): FLORA of SZECHUAN / Neighbourhood of Tatsien-lu. / Coll, R. Cunningham, 1923. / (handwritten) 145 / Cannabis sativa, Linn.
Georeferencing
The coordinate, 30.00, 101.95, is Wikidata's point for Kangding (Q1013814, which carries the alias Tachienlu), 30.00153, 101.95499, rounded to two decimals; SRTM gives 2,810 m there. It stands for the town the label names, not for a collection site near it. The province field takes Sichuan. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's R. Cunningham. H.-L. Li (Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 100, 1948) records an R. Cunningham collecting around Tatsienlu in 1923–24, with some of his specimens at Edinburgh, and the Harvard botanist index has a bare record for him. His first name and dates are not known, so the name is not linked. He is not the Richard Cunningham (1793–1835) or the Robert Oliver Cunningham (1841–1918) of the index.
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
