Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant on sandy flats at Gichha, Punakha, at 8,000 feet in May 1914, and gives its height range. It names no use, variety or local name, and does not say whether the plant was growing wild, escaped or cultivated. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned. The accession is classified Other: the habitat note does not describe a roadside, a field weed or waste ground.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00150673, 2754 × 4096 pixels).

  • Printed label FLORA OF BHUTAN., with printed field names (Locality, Date, Altitude, Remarks, No.) filled in by hand, and the printed foot R. E. Cooper, Collector for A. K. Bulley, Esq., Cheshire.
  • Pencil 153 above the label: a filing figure, not a field datum.
  • Handwritten entries. Locality Gichha Punakha.; Date 26/5/14; Altitude 8000'; Remarks No. 3143, Herb 1'-6'-10' on sandy flats, Cannabis sativa L.

The last word of the remarks is read flats.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. The label names Gichha in Punakha. No place of that name was found in Wikidata, OpenStreetMap or GeoNames under this or a close spelling. An altitude of 8,000 feet (about 2,438 metres) is well above Punakha town, so the gathering cannot be placed at the town either.

Editorial treatment

The collector field takes R.E. Cooper, the label's form, and the article uses the initials only. The catalogue gives the full name as Roland Edgar Cooper; the International Plant Names Index (author 1790-1) and the Harvard Index of Botanists give Rowland Edgar Cooper, 1890–1962. The province field takes the present-day dzongkhag in its English form, Punakha District, because the label names Punakha. The locality field keeps the label's Gichha. The A. K. Bulley of the label's printed foot is Arthur Kilpin Bulley, 1861–1942, in the International Plant Names Index and the Harvard Index of Botanists; the article quotes the label and does not expand the name.

Source discrepancies

  • Habitat. Label: on sandy flats. Catalogue: on sandy soils.
  • Locality. Label: Gichha Punakha. Catalogue: Bhutan:Gichha Punnakha.

The article quotes the label for both and reports the catalogue's wording beside it.

These notes were recorded during accession preparation. Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 04:15, 5 October 2026 (+07)
