Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant at Kwei Chow in Anhwei. It gives no date of collection, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Bishop Museum's image (2000 × 2923 pixels, through GBIF's image cache).

  • Label (printed, completed by hand): Urt. / FLORA OF ANHWEI PROVINCE, CHINA / Herbarium of the University of Nanking / Cannabis sativa L. / Herb. No. 9060 / Kwei Chow / Chuchow (struck through) / Coll. by R.C. Ching / DET. BY E. D. MERRILL / stamp SEP 15 1925.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Kwei Chow under an Anhwei label may be Guichi (貴池, Wade-Giles Kuei-chih; Wikidata Q1335692), the seat of Chizhou, but no source read gives Kwei Chow for Guichi; the match rests on the spelling and the province. The province field takes Anhui, from the label's heading.

Editorial treatment

Date. No collecting date is on the sheet. The stamp of 15 September 1925 is a handling date, so it shows only that the sheet existed by then; Ching's collecting in Anhwei is dated 1925 in the Harvard botanist index. No date is stored, and the title takes (s.d.).

Number. The label's 9060 is the University of Nanking's herbarium number; the catalogue stores it as the collector's number, and the title follows the catalogue.

Image. The Bishop Museum publishes the image under CC BY-NC 4.0; it is read and cited, not uploaded.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's R. C. Ching; the prose links Ren-Chang Ching (秦仁昌, 1898–1986). Merrill is linked as Elmer Drew Merrill, the existing link form.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue's name is Cannabis sativa subsp. sativa (nomenclatural revision by G. W. Staples, 1994); the label's determination by Merrill is Cannabis sativa L.
  • The catalogue stores the herbarium number 9060 as the collector's number.
