Evidentiary scope

The catalogue gives a collector, a number, a date and a locality. It is a single gathering and shows neither a continuing population nor a living germplasm holding, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.

The Botanical Database of Southern Africa publishes no image of this sheet. Its image count is zero, and so is the image count of all 1,361,966 rows in the database: the store is empty, and SANBI's own site still lists plant images among its plans. The accession carries no image until the herbarium supplies a scan.

Georeferencing

BODATSA records the coordinate's accuracy as 10m, which claims a field fix. The point it gives, -28.84724, 31.00498, is about 110 km north of the Durban Botanic Gardens, and the square code it stores, 2831CC, is the square containing that northern point rather than the one containing the gardens. The locality and the coordinate cannot both be right. The point is carried as the catalogue gives it and the disagreement is recorded here; it should not be used until the sheet is seen.

Editorial treatment

The KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium publishes no per-specimen page. Five permalink shapes were tried for a sheet of this batch and all answered 404, so the accession cites the database itself and the barcode identifies the sheet.

This entry is in SANBI's own front end but not in the BODATSA feed that reaches GBIF, so a GBIF sweep misses it. It is one of thirteen such Cannabis entries. Catalogued in February 2025, after the last feed, its absence from GBIF is publication lag rather than a difference of substance.

The plant was growing on the herbarium's own grounds, 135 years after Medley Wood's sheet from the same gardens.
