Evidentiary scope
The label gives a range of hills, the year and the sex of the plant. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (BNU 0036659, 1,000 × 1,530 pixels).
- Label (printed CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF PEKING / PLANTS OF NORTH CHINA, by hand): Name Cannabis sativa L. 大麻 and the male sign / Locality Western Hill. / Date 1939. / Remarks (blank) / collector S. C. Chao ident., the name written between the two printed words.
- A red oval stamp, too faint to read; stamped number 006364. Barcode 北京师范大学生科院植物标本馆 (BNU).
The readings agree. One marks the male sign uncertain; the plant's male flowers bear it out.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label's Western Hill., on a label of the Catholic University of Peking headed Plants of North China, is taken as the Western Hills (西山, Wikidata Q2501459), the range west of the city, as on Liou 1923 (1930). OpenStreetMap holds no outline of the range from which to take a middle, and Wikidata gives it two points about 14 km apart. The label gives no place within the range and no altitude. The province field takes Beijing.
Editorial treatment
Title. The label gives no number, so the title takes s.n.
Collector. The label writes S. C. Chao between the printed words collector and ident. (identified by), so he may have collected the plant, identified it, or both. The collector field takes the name, as the catalogue does, and the identified-by field is left empty. No source on S. C. Chao was found: the Harvard botanist index lists no Chao with those initials who could have collected in 1939. The name is not linked.
The label. The Catholic University of Peking was the English name of Fu Jen University, which was merged into Beijing Normal University, the sheet's holder, in 1952 (English and Chinese Wikipedia).
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
