Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The catalogue places a cannabis plant at Valparaíso in 1895. It gives no habitat, use, local name or note on cultivation, and the label has not been read (see below). The accession therefore documents the plant's presence. It is classified Other. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

The label has not been read. The museum's catalogue marks no image of the sheet, GBIF lists none, and the Smithsonian's open-access service holds no media for it (all checked 5 October 2026). The article rests on the catalogue entry alone, which has no field for verbatim locality, habitat or notes.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. The catalogue's locality (Valparaiso) and its higher geography (Valdivia, Los Ríos (XIV)) disagree, and the label that would settle the question is unpublished. On Buchtien's labels Valparaiso can also head a wider area: a Leiden sheet of September 1895 (L.2047343) reads Valparaiso: Sandfläche bei Viña del Mar. So even the Valparaíso reading would not identify a collection point.

Editorial treatment

The title takes the s.n. form with the locality because the sheet has no collector number. The collection date is the year 1895 alone, the catalogue's precision; the year falls within Buchtien's residence in Chile (1893 to about 1906, per Ossenbach and Jenny). The collector field takes O. Buchtien, the catalogue's form. His full name is Otto August Buchtien (1859–1946; Wikidata Q6054688). The province field takes Valparaíso Region from the locality field, for the reason given under Source discrepancies.

Source discrepancies

  • The National Museum of Natural History's entry gives the locality Valparaiso with the county Valdivia and the state Los Ríos (XIV); GBIF (occurrence 1319023235) copies all three.
  • Of the 466 Chilean occurrences of 1895 in GBIF that name Buchtien, 324 carry a Valparaíso province value and 5 a Los Ríos one. Several of his 1895 labels carry the address Valdivia, Casilla 22 (a post-office box) beside a Valparaíso locality, for example Leiden L.2842579, +Valparaiso: Auf Durren Ebenen. Valdivia, Casilla 22., which GBIF files under Los Ríos. A Smithsonian sheet of Colliguaja odorifera (US 1178145) has the locality Valdivia, Casilla 22 and is also filed under Los Ríos.
  • Whether this sheet's label carries the same address, and whether that is the source of the catalogue's Valdivia, cannot be checked without the label. The locality field is the more specific of the two values, and it agrees with the place where Ossenbach and Jenny say Buchtien began collecting.
