Page scope
Betroka treats the country round the town of Betroka, in Betroka District of Anosy Region, southern Madagascar, as a cannabis growing area. It covers the Andriry area named by the sources, the movement of the crop from the mountains to the towns, its link with cattle raiding and the seed collections named for the district. Madagascar's law on cannabis is treated at Madagascar.

Discussion
Why Betroka is a growing area
- The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (East and Southern Africa Risk Bulletin 11, August–September 2020) calls the mountainous Andriry region near the town of Betroka one of Madagascar's two main cannabis-producing regions. It rests on interviews in and around Betroka in June and July 2020.
- The same organisation (Risk Bulletin 18, April–May 2021) names Betroka in the south and Analabe in the north as the major regions of production. The head of the national police's anti-narcotics division, quoted there, names "the district of Betroka" as a production zone.
- Midi Madagasikara (9 August 2024) reports cannabis fetched from "faritra Andriry, distrikan'i Betroka" (the Andriry area, Betroka district) and seized at Ranomena.
- Les Nouvelles (4 September 2026) reports a seizure at Maroraza, Tsaraitso commune, which investigators believed came from the hills of Andriry.
- The Real Seed Company's southern line was listed in April 2026 as collected in the Betroka highlands.
- The status is Active: every source above dates from 2020 or later. Seizures and arrests do not change it, since no source says that growing has ended.
Extent and border
- No source read for this page draws a boundary round the growing area. The sources name the town of Betroka, the Andriry region or hills "near" the town or "in Betroka district", Tsaraitso commune and the Betroka highlands.
- The map border is approximate. It is drawn on Betroka District, the present-day district (OpenStreetMap relation 19551924), which covers about 13,700 km². The infobox area is rounded from the border.
- The district is far larger than any tract the sources describe. It takes in the town, Tsaraitso and the communes on the road south (Ianabinda, Isoanala), none of which a source names as a place where cannabis is grown.
- The Andriry massif does not lie wholly in the district. A United Nations project for the massif works in 14 communes in four regions (Anosy, Androy, Ihorombe and Atsimo-Atsinanana). The parts of the massif in neighbouring districts fall outside the border, because the sources tie the crop to Betroka and Betroka district by name.
- The Real Seed Company's lot carries the label point of Betroka District as its coordinate, not a collection site.
Sources
- GI-TOC, 2020 and 2021. Both bulletins were read in full on the organisation's website, notes included. The 2020 bulletin's interviews are with a trafficking leader under a false name, a police officer, a businessman, a prisoner, a former deputy mayor, a former politician, a prison guard and the public prosecutor at Betroka. Claims made by one interviewee (the size of a group, payments to officials) are attributed to that person in the article.
- UNDP, 21 June 2024. The announcement of the Andriry Milamy peace project was read in full. It is cited only for the massif as a pastoral zone, its insecurity from zebu theft and the communes the project covers. It says nothing about cannabis.
- Press. The Midi Madagasikara report is in Malagasy; its figures (six men caught of about 25, some 50 bundles of about 13 kg) are given as printed. The destination "aty an-drenivohitra" (to the capital) is the paper's own inference and is given as the bundles' expected route. The Les Nouvelles report gives the origin as the investigators' supposition, and the article keeps it so.
- Seed listings. The Real Seed Company's listing could not be opened again (the shop's site refused the connection); its wording is as quoted on the accession's talk page.
Sources not used
- A government announcement of 13 March 2020 on a visit by the Prime Minister to Andriry, and a Ministry of the Interior report of a five-hectare field destroyed on Andriry, were seen only in search results; neither website could be opened. They are not cited.
- Les Nouvelles of 1 September 2026 (cannabis loaded at Bemelo, Ianabinda commune, and seized at Mananovy) and Midi Madagasikara of 12 January 2026 (3.1 tonnes burned at Betroka, from seizures made in the second half of 2025) report trafficking and seizures without saying where the cannabis was grown.
- ATAO Genetics, which grew a line from Malagasy seed, wrote on a growers' forum that the seed "probably" came from Betroka, and later that it was bought at Toliara. That line is not counted here, since its place of origin is not settled.
