Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The catalogue's transcription places a cannabis plant in Japan, Japonia, with no date and no place within the country. The label itself has not been seen. It gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Not read: the holder publishes no image of the sheet. The page reports the catalogue's fields as the Naturalis Biodiversity Center gives them (read 12 October 2026): unit L 0420296; collector Bürger, H; number s.n.; country Japan; locality Japonia.; basis Herbarium sheet; determination Cannabis sativa L. f. indica; no date, province or coordinates.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The catalogue names only Japan (Japonia.), and gives no place within it.

Editorial treatment

Catalogue only. The accession is made from the holder's catalogue alone, with no image; every fact on the page is the catalogue's, and the label may hold more than the catalogue transcribes.

Title. The catalogue gives no number and no date. Heinrich Bürger died on 25 March 1858 (English Wikipedia, which gives his birth as 1804 or 1806), so a gathering of his is no later than 1858, the limit the title gives. The Dutch government made him Philipp Franz von Siebold's assistant on Dejima, the trading post at Nagasaki, in 1825, and his posting in Japan ended on 1 July 1835 (English Wikipedia); the Japanese Wikipedia has him leave Japan in 1829 and come back in 1834. Three Leiden sheets carry his name, Japan and no date, so each title adds the holder's catalogue number.

Collector. The collector field takes H. Bürger, the catalogue's Bürger, H in initials form; the prose links his biography.

Taxon. The scientific name field gives the Naturalis determination.

Source discrepancies

  • Naturalis determines the sheet as Cannabis sativa L. f. indica; GBIF gives var. indica (Lam.) Wehmer. The scientific name field follows the holder.
