Discussion

Why the area is mapped

  • Rajesh Ramachandran (Outlook, 26 September 2005) reports cultivation by Irula, Muduga and Kurumba growers and by migrants from Idukki, and forest officials' figure of 250 km² of forest where ganja is cultivated.
  • UNI (24 March and 26 August 2006) reports plantations destroyed at Bhoothayar and in ten places in the Attappadi forest.
  • Onmanorama (27 July 2016) reports 300 plants on 6.5 acres destroyed in 2016.
  • PTI (Deccan Herald, 15 October 2025), Metro Vaartha (19 September 2026) and PTI (Deccan Chronicle, 25 September 2026) report plantations destroyed near Sathyakkallumala, Kadugumanna and Ponnakkal Mala.

Growing status

The status is Active: plantations are reported in 2005, 2006, 2016, 2025 and 2026. No source read says that growing has ended.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is the Attappadi block panchayat in OpenStreetMap (relation 17950367), simplified, about 730 km². It is a proxy: the sources name Attappadi as the tract, and the block is the administrative unit that carries the name.
  • No source read gives a narrower extent for the cultivation.
  • The map point (11.09, 76.60) is near Agali; the border is not drawn from it or from any news point.

Sources

  • Spelling. The sources write Attappadi, Attappady and Attapadi; the article uses Attappadi.
  • Outlook. "Stone Age" carries the date of the magazine's 2022 archive migration on its page; the issue date of 26 September 2005 comes from the path of its photograph.
  • Press. Every article cited was read in full.

Where the sources disagree

  • Plantations found before 2016. Onmanorama (27 July 2016) calls the 2016 find only the second plantation detected in 15 years, but UNI reports two plantation raids in 2006 alone, one of them with the Excise Department taking part. The article reports both.
  • September 2026. Metro Vaartha dates the Kadugumanna raid to Saturday 19 September; the PTI report of 25 September mentions "another large cannabis plantation" detected in Attappadi on 20 September. It is not clear whether these are the same find; the article gives the Kadugumanna raid on the date of the report that describes it.
