Evidentiary scope
The label places the plant in the Muyunkum sands near Akyr-Tyube in June 1931: Степная ложбина между песчаными грядами. (a steppe hollow between sand ridges). It gives no use and no note on cultivation. The name Cannabis ruderalis on the label is a determination from the specimen, not a record of where the plant grew. The plant grew in open steppe, outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3612 × 5179 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- Printed label. / Leg / Det (blank) / printer's line Тип. 853. 10.000.
- By hand. / 14/VI 1931 г. / № 140 / signature. A pencilled 1973 on the label, top right, is not used.
- Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
- Earlier slip under it: Cannabis sativa L. / RB 180; Ernest Small and Sept. 1, 1974 show through.
- Readings that differ. The place line was read Муюн-Кумы. A third look confirmed Муюн-Кумы and Акыр-Тюбе, the cursive т being written like an m, which the second reading took for ш; the word between was not read. The signature was read Т. Астапова and Ф. or Р. Астанова; the page takes the catalogue's form.
Georeferencing
The point 42.99, 72.11 is Akyrtobe railway station, OpenStreetMap node 3788871522, beside the village of Akyrtobe (Ақыртөбе, node 297596392) in Turar Ryskulov District, Jambyl Region. It is the only Akyrtobe in OpenStreetMap between 42° and 46° N and 69° and 76° E, and it lies 0.8 km from the edge of the Muyunkum desert as OpenStreetMap draws it (way 611854275), which agrees with the label's sands and sand ridges; the identification rests on that agreement and on the reading Акыр-Тюбе set out above. The label puts the hollow near the place, not at it. SRTM gives 633 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Place. Akyr-Tyube is Akyrtobe and Muyun-Kumy the Muyunkum; the locality takes today's names, and the province field Jambyl Region.
Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's T. Astapova. No source read gives her full name, which is not linked.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives no number or locality; the label gives № 140 and the place.
- The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L.; the label's own determination is Cannabis ruderalis Janisch..
