Page scope
Appellation covers the appellation of origin, the protected geographical name of a product, and its application to cannabis: the California programme and the proposals for Moroccan kif and hashish. Terroir as a property of the plant and its products is the subject of the article on terroir in cannabis. The pages of the wiki's own appellations (named cultivation localities) are described in the help page on geographic pages; the use of the word there does not imply legal protection.

Sources
- The Lisbon Agreement is cited from the WIPO Lex text (as revised at Stockholm in 1967 and amended in 1979), Articles 1 to 3.
- California Business and Professions Code, section 26063 is cited from California Legislative Information, in the version effective 16 July 2021.
- The California Department of Food and Agriculture's programme pages (the programme page and the regulatory archive), as they stood on 16 October 2026. Dates of the rulemakings come from the archive's list of documents.
- Chouvy (2020, Belgeo) and Chouvy (2022, Les Cahiers d'EMAM) are on OpenEdition, in French. The translations of their wording on the page are paraphrases, not quotations.
- Chouvy (2024, International Journal of Drug Policy) is cited from its abstract (PubMed 38875878); the page cites only the results and conclusion the abstract states.
Where the sources disagree
- The five douars. Different authors have named different villages, and some have given tribe or fraction names in place of village names. The page names only the five proposed by Bellakhdar, as Chouvy reports them, and states Chouvy's view that the tradition behind them is probably invented.
Other reports
- Studies that compare the chemistry of cannabis from different places belong to the article on terroir in cannabis and are not used here.
- Press reports on proposed appellations for individual Californian areas were not used. The programme was not accepting petitions in October 2026, so the page names no Californian appellation.
