Evidentiary scope
The label records a cannabis plant from Japan, gathered on 20 July of an unstated year, in the herbarium of H. L. Jones. It gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image of the sheet (3200 × 4800 pixels). The two readings agree on every line.
- Label (printed heading, ink entries). HERBARIUM OF H. L. JONES. / Cannabis sativa, / Japan. / July 20.
- Accession label (printed, above it). Willard Sherman Turrell Herbarium / From the estate of Blanche Turrell in memory of her father, Miami Class of 1842 / comprising / The Herbarium of Oberlin College purchased in 1967; a pencilled 64 at its upper right.
- Stamp (upper right). HERBARIUM OF / Ex. 11256 (Ex. in hand, the number stamped) / OBERLIN COLLEGE.
- Stamp (upper left). HERBARIUM / MU / 20703.
- Barcode label. Herbarium MU / 000306271 / Databased. The scale bar photographed with the sheet reads copyright reserved.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label names only Japan, and the catalogue adds no place within it.
Editorial treatment
Collector. HERBARIUM OF H. L. JONES. names the herbarium the sheet belonged to, its owner, not the person who gathered the plant, so the collector field is empty and the title takes the Anon. form; the catalogue also gives no collector. The Harvard Index of Botanists has one H. L. Jones, Herbert Lyon Jones (1866-1898), and lists his collections from Massachusetts and Ohio and Japan among the countries he collected in. No source read says that he is the H. L. Jones of this label, or connects him with Oberlin College.
Title. The label gives a day and month, July 20., and no year, and no source fixes a latest year, so the title takes s.d. and the date field is empty.
Numbers. Ex. 11256 is the number of the Oberlin College herbarium, and 20703 (the catalogue's MU-20703) the Turrell Herbarium's earlier number; neither is a collector's number. The pencilled 64 is not used.
Image. The page carries no image. The holder's portal gives the image a CC0 dedication, but the scale bar photographed with the sheet reads copyright reserved; with the two statements in conflict, the image is cited and not uploaded.
Source discrepancies
- None. The catalogue's place, day and month match the label; its s.c. (no collector) agrees with the page.
