Evidentiary scope
The catalogue places a cannabis plant at Tokyo on 16 September 1921. The label itself has not been seen. The catalogue gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Not read: the holder publishes no image of the sheet. The page reports the catalogue's fields as NSII and GBIF publish them (read 12 October 2026). NSII: catalogue number 2151C0001K00001658; no collector or number; place 日本 (Japan) and nothing below it; date 19210916; name Cannabis sativa, family Moraceae; no image. GBIF: the same catalogue number; no collector; country Japan; locality 东京; date 1921.
Georeferencing
The point 35.68, 139.76 is the centre of Tokyo as OpenStreetMap maps it (node 265018692, place=city), in Chiyoda ward. In 1921 Tokyo named the city of Tokyo, made up of fifteen wards from 1889 until 1932, and also the prefecture around it; the city is the usual sense and is taken here, and the prefecture cannot be excluded. The point stands for the old city as an area, not the place the plant was grown. No source read gives the old city's area. The five present-day central wards (Chiyoda, Chūō, Minato, Bunkyō and Taitō) reach 3.4, 4.1, 6.5, 6.8 and 7.0 km from the point; the old city's wards also took in ground in neighbouring present-day wards, and the uncertainty allows for that. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 9 km. The place is GBIF's 东京 (Tokyo); NSII gives Japan only.
Editorial treatment
Catalogue only. The accession is made from the holder's catalogue alone, with no image; every fact on the page is the catalogue's, and the label may hold more than the catalogue transcribes.
Title. The catalogue names no collector and gives no number, so the title takes the Anon. s.n. form, with GBIF's Tokyo as its place and NSII's year.
Place. The province field takes Tokyo, which contains the old city on either reading of the name. No municipality is entered, because the old city is split among several present-day wards.
Source discrepancies
- GBIF gives the locality 东京 (Tokyo); NSII gives Japan with no place within it. The page follows GBIF.
- NSII gives the date 16 September 1921; GBIF gives the year only. The page follows NSII.
