Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label gives a name, a local name, a place and a day. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from Naturalis's image (1171 × 1920 pixels); the page states only what the two readings agree.

  • Printed label: Herb. Hort. Bot. Calcuttensis / No. (blank) / Cannabis indica L / a local name / Hab. Goalpara Assam / Leg. 23-6-84 / Urticac.
  • Slip: CANNABIS SATIVA LINN. / v. indica.

The local name is read Gunja by one reading and doubtfully Eunga by the other; it may be Ganja. It is not agreed and is not put in the local name field. The year is read 84 by one reading and 84 or 81 by the other; the catalogue's 1884 decides it.

Georeferencing

The point 26.18, 90.62 is the town of Goalpara, OpenStreetMap node 245743490, the headquarters of Goalpara District. The label names Goalpara and nothing within it. The point places the gathering at the town, not at a spot within it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Title. The label names no collector and gives no number, so the title takes Anon. s.n. with the place, as other unnamed sheets on the wiki do. The collector field is left empty.

Place. In 1884 Goalpara was a district of Assam with its seat at the town of the same name. The label's Goalpara could mean the district; the page takes it as the town, the place a label line Hab. usually names, and the uncertainty is the town's.
