Evidentiary scope

The sheet places a cannabis plant near Nanae, by Hakodate, in September 1885. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation, and no collector. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of Edinburgh's image (814 × 1200 pixels; the garden's own image server did not answer).

• Paper tag on the stem. 3189.
• Pencil, foot of the sheet. Cannabis sativa L.
• Readings that differ. One reading gives Nanaye and the other Nanaye as probable; nothing else differs.

Georeferencing

The point 41.90, 140.69 is the town of Nanae as OpenStreetMap maps it (node 263099367, place=town), in Kameda District north of Hakodate. The label's near Nanaye beside Hakodate is read as Nanae; no source found spells the town Nanaye, and the identification rests on the name and on Hakodate beside it. The town's area (relation 4088016, 216 km²) reaches 18.7 km from the point, and near allows a little more. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 20 km.

Editorial treatment

Number. The same number, 3189, is pencilled on the sheet and written on the tag tied to the stem: a collection number. The sheet names no collector, so the title is Anon. 3189 and the collector field is empty.

Place. The province and municipality fields take Hokkaido and Nanae; the label's near Nanaye, Hakodate stays in the locality field as written.

Image. The page carries no image: the label was read from GBIF's cached copy of the garden's image, which is too small to upload.
