Sources
- Bouby (2002), Comptes Rendus Palevol 1(2): 89–95, in French with an English abridged version: the site, the excavation, the date of the layer, the sieving, the plant assemblage, the hemp achenes and the author's reading of them.
- McPartland and Hegman (2018), Vegetation History and Archaeobotany 27, Online Resource 2 (the site table): the review's entry for the site.
Works cited at second hand
- The excavation report, C. Amiel, J. André, L. Bouby, A. Burens, I. Carrère, J. M. Carozza, L. Carozza, D. Galop, J.-L. Guinot, S. Philibert and C. Ranché (1997), Le site préhistorique et protohistorique d'Al Poux à Fontanes (Lot) : écologie d'un bassin versant, an unpublished rescue-excavation report (Toulouse, 122 pp.), is known only from Bouby's reference list. The excavation and the date are given here from Bouby.
- J. M. Carozza, L. Carozza, L. Bouby and others (2002), on the Holocene history of the Boulou basin, in a volume of the Presses Universitaires Franc-Comtoises, is cited by Bouby with the excavation report for the occupation and its date. Only its abstract was read, which does not name the site or hemp. Bouby prints its pages as 299–313; the repository record of the paper gives 239–253.
Source discrepancies
- Date. Bouby dates the layer to the end of the second or the beginning of the first century BCE. McPartland and Hegman give 100 BCE and the La Tène period. The infobox follows the primary.
- Method. McPartland and Hegman describe the identification as "microanalysis of hemp seeds". Bouby says only that the achenes are easily identified by their shape and gives no measurements. The infobox gives morphology.
- Count. Bouby estimates the abundance of hemp at six achenes, on the paper's measure of remains scaled to 10 kg of sediment. McPartland and Hegman record six hemp seeds. Bouby's wording is followed.
Infobox values
- Coordinates. None (see Georeferencing).
- Dates of the find. 150 to 50 BCE. The infobox takes whole years, and this range covers Bouby's "end of the second or beginning of the first century BCE" for the layer that held the achenes. The basis is typological: Italian amphorae of the Dressel IA type and other pottery. Bouby reports no radiocarbon or other date for the layer.
- Site type. Left empty. Bouby describes two occupations on the stream banks, but the hemp layer has no structure built by people, and the settlement is inferred only from pottery and lay outside the sampled area. None of the infobox's types fits the hemp layer with certainty.
- Period. Late Iron Age, Bouby's second âge du Fer. He names no archaeological culture, so the culture field is empty.
- Excavated and excavators. Left empty. Bouby gives neither the years nor the team; the excavation report is known only from its citation.
- Disputed. Not set. No cited paper questions that the achenes are hemp. Bouby's own question is whether the plant was grown or came as a weed.
- Where the finds are now. Not stated in any cited source; left empty.
Georeferencing
No point is given. Bouby places the site on the floor of the Boulou valley, in the commune of Fontanes, and prints a location map but no position. No gazetteer holds the site: Wikidata has no item for it, and OpenStreetMap has no object for it, only the stream (the Ruisseau du Boulou) and the commune. Wikidata (Q1408460) and OpenStreetMap (relation 122747) both place the commune of Fontanes, about 0.2 km apart; that is the village, not the site. The review's position (44.322° N, 1.508° E) lies about 1.4 to 1.6 km from both points for the commune and is not used. Éloise 07:55, 30 October 2026 (+07)
