Discussion
Identifier
The accession identifier is AFP-MWI-CEN-0120040001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Holder segment
AFPstands for Afropips. - Country segment
MWIand province segmentCEN. The 2004 page names Nkhotakota. The town and the district of that name both lie in the Central Region, Malawi's first-level unit, entered in the same form as on RSC-MWI-CEN-0120190001. - Year 2004 is the year of the earliest dated document found that lists the line: the business's Malawi Gold page, captured by the Wayback Machine on 12 August 2004 (http://afropips.moonfruit.com/malawigold). No earlier capture of that page exists. No source gives a collection year, so the identifier takes the first attested year. A capture shows when the archive saw a page, not when the line went on sale, so the year is a lower bound and moves if an earlier listing is found.
- Month 01 is the placeholder used when the year comes from first attestation.
- Sequence 0001. It is the only accession of the business for this country, province segment and year.
Sourcing
The business's own pages, read from Wayback Machine captures: the Malawi Gold page of 12 August, 13 October and 25 December 2004 (http://afropips.moonfruit.com/malawigold); the Power Malawi page of 13 April 2009; the Malawi Gold page of 22 March 2010 (http://www.afropips.moonfruit.com/malawi-gold/4511420424); and the shop on afropips.com of 27 December 2010. The address afropips.com was a frame that loaded the site at afropips.moonfruit.com from 2004 to 2009. The SeedFinder description of the line repeats the 2010 page with small changes and was read on 12 October 2026.
Every statement about the line's origin, plants and effect is the business's own account of its stock and is attributed to it. No page names a grower, a farm, a collection site or a collection date. The shop of December 2010 sold a product named Malawi; its own product page was never archived, and the article does not say that it was the same seed as the Malawi Gold of 2004.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace. The business's 2004 page says that its seed was "only available from the Top Malawi Gold Growers in Malawi", and sets it apart from seed taken from cobs exported to South Africa. That places the source of the seed with growers in Malawi. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the business's account. The page names no grower, farm or date, and the account has not been checked against other sources. "Pure Landrace Sativa" is the business's own label and is attributed in the article. An earlier version of this note classified the line as Other, on the ground that a seller's account does not establish the class of the source population.
- Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. The page says that the seed came from growers in Malawi, but gives no chain of custody from them to the seed on sale.
- Accession type is left empty: the page does not say whether the seed on sale was the growers' own seed or the business's reproduction of it.
- Cultivation status: Unknown. The shop on afropips.com was still online in June 2012, and in January 2013 the address showed a parked search page (see Afropips). That says nothing about whether anyone still grows the line.
- Traits. The flowering time in the infobox is the 2004 page's figure.
Figures as written
The 2004 page gives "Flowering: 70 days +". The infobox flowering fields take weeks: 70 days is 10 weeks, entered as the minimum; no maximum is given, so none is entered. The later figures belong to later versions of the listing and are reported in the article only.
Source discrepancies
- Flowering time. "70 days +" (2004); "90 -120 days of 12/12" (2010); "14-16 weeks" (SeedFinder, undated).
- Place. The heading of August 2004 reads "Original NKHOTAKOTA". From October 2004 the heading reads "A GRADE", and the 2010 heading names no place in Malawi. No page says why the name was dropped.
- "Landrace". The 2010 page calls Malawi Gold one of the most potent "Pure African Landrace Sativas"; the SeedFinder copy of the same sentence reads "pure African sativas".
Lineage
- 2004 AFP Malawi Mini IBL is the business's shorter selection of this line and names this page as its parent.
- Malawi Gold 2019 IBL, sold by The Real Seed Company, says that its seed came from "Afropips, via collector community" and calls itself the original Afropips Malawi Gold heirloom. It names this page as its parent, and the map point for the line is on this page.
- The business's hybrids made from the line (Malberry, Malaki, Mal'SP, Malberino, Power Malawi, Malawi 99 and others) have no accessions.
Archived versions
The page was captured three times in 2004, with the same description each time; only the heading, the caption's "Maize Leaf" (August) or "Corn Leaf" (October and December) and the price changed. In December 2004 the seed was offered for $40 on "C-Bay". The 2009 captures of the site hold its menu and hybrid pages but no capture of a Malawi Gold page; the page of 22 March 2010 is the next. The product pages of the shop on afropips.com (2010 to 2012) were never archived.
Georeferencing
The point −12.85, 34.09 is the middle of Nkhotakota District's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 7343221, about 4,330 km²), and falls inside the district. The 2004 page's "Original NKHOTAKOTA" can mean the town or the district; the town (OpenStreetMap node 261051594) lies inside the district, about 23 km from the point, so the district point covers both readings. It is an area point for the district, not the place the seed was grown. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 38 km.
Conservation priority
Not rated. The listing gives nothing about the size or status of a source population.
