Southern Valle del Cauca is a cannabis growing area in the south of the department of Valle del Cauca, in western Colombia. It is made up of three municipalities, Palmira, Pradera and Florida, which run from the floor of the Cauca valley up to the crest of the Central Cordillera. Florida borders the Northern Cauca growing area to the south, and the crest is the border with Tolima. The area belongs to the Cordillera Central (Colombia) growing region. In a 2022 study written for Colombia's truth commission, Gildardo Vanegas Muñoz records arrests of peasants growing marijuana in Palmira and Florida from the mid-1950s.[1]: 12
Early reports
On 26 September 1950 the Cali newspaper Diario del Pacífico reported that marijuana seed, ready to be sown on a plot of ten plazas, had been seized in rural Palmira.[1]: 11 Vanegas Muñoz names Palmira and Florida, with Corinto and Caloto in the north of Cauca, as the municipalities where peasants growing marijuana were arrested from the mid-1950s; there were no arrests of large traffickers.[1]: 12
Since 2000
The FARC used a corridor across the Central Cordillera that joins Caldono, Jambaló, Caloto, Corinto and Miranda, in Cauca, to Florida and Pradera, in Valle del Cauca. Vanegas Muñoz describes this zone as one known for its marijuana and coca crops, and at one time for opium poppy.[1]: 23 Five entries of the Ministry of Defence's open data record about 1.2 hectares of marijuana eradicated in Florida between 19 October and 23 November 2018.[2]
