Expansion and functional diversification of terpene synthases shape volatile terpenoid landscape in Cannabis sativa
Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B
Analyses the terpene synthase gene family of Cannabis sativa using haplotype-resolved genome data, volatile profiling, transcriptomics and enzyme assays. Profiling of 28 samples from six cultivars across developmental stages identified 227 volatile terpenes, 88 monoterpenes and 139 sesquiterpenes, with patterns specific to tissue, stage and cultivar. Genome annotation found 41 full-length terpene synthase genes, expanded into subfamily clusters that differ between haplotypes, and the authors separate a core set highly expressed in inflorescences from genes regulated by cultivar. Six previously unreported enzymes showed mono- and sesquiterpene synthase activity, including substrate promiscuity across subfamilies.
