The author describes the anthology, which survives in four manuscripts, as the oldest Arabic collection of prose and verse inspired by hashish. The first part treats hashish from historical, medical and legal-religious angles, noting that several scholars of the 7th to 8th centuries AH (13th to 14th centuries CE) devoted writings to it and listed it among the blameworthy things. The second part argues that the hashish-eater became a figure of comic potential in literature, derived from narrative material earlier attached to drunkards, fools and madmen.
