Detectives report uprooting a three acre cannabis plantation at Kakongo in Mwingi Central
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said in a statement on 14 September 2026 that officers of the National Police Service and national government administration officers, acting on intelligence, raided a river delta along the Tana River at Kakongo village in Kairungu location, Kiomo Kyethani ward, in Mwingi Central. According to the statement the team found a plantation of about three acres in which cannabis had been interspersed among assorted food crops, and with help from members of the public the crop was uprooted and taken to Mwingi police station, where it weighed 2,000 kilogrammes and was given an estimated street value of 60 million shillings. The directorate said the cultivators fled before officers arrived and that no arrests were made. Personal documents believed to belong to them were recovered, along with seven solar panels, five petrol water pump generators, 30 kilogrammes of fertiliser and assorted hand tools. Detectives of the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau in Mwingi Central are pursuing the network behind the site.
