Henry 11209 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered from cultivated plants at Feng Chen Lin, at 6,000 feet, in Yunnan, China, by Augustine Henry. Two of its labels record that the plant was woven into cloth. The gathering is undated. The New York Botanical Garden holds a sheet as 01414425;[1] the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh hold duplicates.
Collection and locality
The New York sheet carries Henry's printed slip, A. Henry, China, No. 11209, with Yunnan, Mengtze and cultd (cultivated), and a pencilled field slip reading Sept 10 and cultd.[2] Its catalogue gives Yunnan and the number 11209, with no locality or date.[1] The labels of the two duplicates, in the same hand, give the place as Feng Chen Lin and the altitude as 6000', with the note cultd. woven into cloth worn by the aborigines.[3][4] The Missouri catalogue reads the place as Feng Chen Len;[5] the Edinburgh sheet adds Purchased 1898.[4] No label gives a year.
Mengtze is the present-day city of Mengzi, where Henry served in the Chinese customs. The New York label names it, while the other two name Feng Chen Lin, which has not been located.
Recorded use
Henry's labels on the Missouri and Edinburgh sheets record the plant as cultivated and woven into cloth worn by the aborigines.[3][4] The word aborigines is Henry's; the labels do not name the people.
Specimen and identification
The New York sheet carries two branched flowering stems with open flower clusters and palmate leaves; the Edinburgh sheet a leafy stem with a flowering top.[2][4] E. Small determined the New York sheet in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa.[2] A footer on the sheet records that Henry's herbarium was bought for the garden by its members in 1901.[2] Edinburgh's catalogue files its sheet with no collector or place.[6]
