Arauca is a cannabis growing area in the department of Arauca, in eastern Colombia, on the border with Venezuela. It is made up of four municipalities: Saravena and Tame, where the Eastern Cordillera falls to the plains, and Arauquita and Puerto Rondón, on the plains. The area belongs to the Llanos Orientales growing region.

The 1970s

In January 1973 a National Police report to President Misael Pastrana named five regions of marijuana cultivation in Colombia, among them the border with Venezuela in the departments of Santander, Boyacá and Arauca.[1]:  In March 1979 Ernesto Samper Pizano, president of the National Association of Financial Institutions (ANIF), wrote, in a text reprinted by the journalist José Cervantes Angulo, that the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta still held at least 60 per cent of the area planted with marijuana, but that growing had shifted towards the Llanos Orientales, above all Arauca and Vichada.[2]: 250–251

Eradication figures

About 12.6 hectares of marijuana were eradicated in the four municipalities between October 2013 and January 2017, in 12 entries of the Ministry of Defence's open data. Arauquita accounts for about 8.1 hectares in 7 entries, Puerto Rondón for 2.5 hectares in one entry (September 2014) and Tame for 2 hectares in 3 entries (2014–2015); one entry in Saravena, in June 2015, is of a hundredth of a hectare.[3]
