Zaozhuang (枣庄) is a historical hemp growing area of southern Shandong, China, drawn on the city of Zaozhuang, which took the place of Yi County (峄县) in 1960.[3] Hemp has a long history there. Its main producing places were Dawu, Gangtou, Jisuo and Yizhuang, and by 1985 its planting had shrunk to 1,700 mu (about 113 hectares).[1] In 1917 hemp was grown for rope at Yihsien, the county town of Yi County, on rich black soil and often under irrigation.[2]
Hemp for rope
The Rev. R. G. Coonradt sent hemp seed from Yihsien to the United States Department of Agriculture, which received it on 1 June 1917 for its Office of Fiber Investigations. His note with the seed reads: "The hemp is planted here in March, in rich, black soil, and often irrigated. From the fiber taken from the outside of the stalk our best rope is made."[2] The department numbered the lot plant introduction 44804 (NPG-CHN-SHD-0019170001).[4] The old county town of Yihsien is now Yicheng District of Zaozhuang.[3]
Decline
The Zaozhuang yearbook of 2006 puts the decline of hemp down to plastics and chemical fibres: as they replaced many hemp products, hemp found few buyers and less of it was planted. In 1985 hemp was planted on only 1,700 mu, with a total output of 260,000 jin (about 130 tonnes).[1]
