Yuanping (原平) is a historical hemp growing area of northern Shanxi, China, drawn on the county-level city of Yuanping, in Xinzhou, which was Guo County (崞县, Guō Xiàn) from 606 until 1958. That year the county took the name Yuanping and moved its seat from Guoyang (崞阳) to the town of Yuanping.[2] In March 1908 the plant explorer Frank N. Meyer collected seed of a hemp in the Kwohsien district of Shansi that was "Grown in mountain valleys; considered to be the best variety of hemp of the Shansi Province, and sold in all of the towns and cities for string and rope manufacture". He called it by its Chinese name, Shan ma tse.[1]

The hemp of 1908

Meyer was an agricultural explorer for the United States Department of Agriculture. He collected two lots of the hemp in the district on consecutive days. The first, his number 931a, came from Soolungko on 3 March 1908: "Found growing in mountain valleys and considered a good hemp".[3] The second, his number 932a, came from Tongchor on 4 March and carries the note on the best hemp of the province.[1] The department numbered them plant introductions 23298 (NPG-CHN-SHX-0319080002) and 22690 (NPG-CHN-SHX-0319080001).[4][5]
