Ward 6218 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Isipingo Flats in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on 30 March 1967 by C. J. Ward. The KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium (NH) holds the sheet as NH0059638-0.[1][2] The National Herbarium (PRE) holds a second sheet as PRE0372441-0, and a third at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, E01459338, is a University of Natal sheet whose label Edinburgh's catalogue does not transcribe.
Collection and locality
Durban's entry gives the date as 30 March 1967, the locality as Durban District: Isipingo Flats (E)., the habitat as Altitude : 15-20ft. and the altitude as 5 m.[1]
The field note
Durban's plant description carries the collector's own note in full: Herb, erect, branched, 92cm tall, in disturbed pale sand, in partial light shade. Only 1 seen, male. [Apparently accidentally planted by man - former eating and resting site of gang recently constructing pipe line.] The square brackets are the catalogue's. The note attributes the plant to seed dropped where a pipeline gang had been eating and resting.[1]
The Edinburgh sheet
The Edinburgh sheet is a University of Natal Herbarium card, which makes it a sheet of the herbarium that publishes least about its own holdings. It reads Natal: Durban district; ISIPINGO FLATS (E) (29 deg 58 min S, 30 deg 57 min E)., Coll. C. J. WARD., Coll's. No. 6218, Date 30-3-67, and carries the same field note. Edinburgh's own catalogue records no collector, number, date or country for it, filing it under the region Southern Africa.[2]
Specimen and identification
All three sheets are filed as Cannabis sativa L. var. sativa.[1][2]
