Early reports
In 1961 the Colombian delegation to an inter-American consultative group on narcotics control, meeting in Rio de Janeiro, reported that marijuana was grown in Valle del Cauca, Caldas and Antioquia, drawing on a report of the country's secret police. In Caldas the report named Villamaría, a municipality near Manizales.[1]: 214–215 The historian Lina Britto writes that before the export boom of the 1970s marijuana in the Andean interior grew in scattered places, easily hidden among other cash crops, and that Manizales got its supply from neighbouring Villamaría.[2]: 73
