This template renders the infobox for appellation pages. It pairs with Module:Boundaries for polygon lookup and writes semantic properties consumed by the home map and rollup queries elsewhere on the wiki.

Boundary polygons are not passed as a parameter. The template looks up the current page name in Module:Boundaries automatically. To register or update an appellation's polygon, edit that module directly (see Boundary registration).

Every parameter is optional. A row appears only when one of its parameters is filled. The same holds for the section heading above it.

Parameters

Identity

appellation_name
Display name shown in the infobox header, stored as Has appellation name. Defaults to the page name if omitted. Appellation pages carry the suffix "(appellation)" in their titles, so give the bare name here (Nirang) or the header shows the suffix too.
other_names
Alternative spellings or local names, comma-separated. Shown as the subtitle below the header. Not stored.
image
Filename of a representative image (without the File: prefix). Rendered at 320 px wide.
image_alt
Alt text for the image. Defaults to the appellation name.
image_caption
Caption shown below the image. Shown only when image is set.

Hierarchy

Each value is linked, so give the bare title of an existing page, without brackets.

gene_pool
e.g. South Asian Gene Pool. Linked.
regional_complex
e.g. Hindu Kush-Himalayan. Linked.
growing_region
e.g. Western Himalayas. Linked.
growing_area
e.g. Malana Valley. Linked.
parent_appellation
Used when an appellation sits inside another appellation (rare). Leave blank for peer appellations. Linked.

Geography

country
e.g. India. Linked.
provinces
State or province, shown in the "Province/State" row as plain text (not linked). Several can be given, separated by a comma and a space; each is stored as its own Has province value. A title that itself contains a comma would be split in two, so keep such a title out of this field.
admin_2
Second-level subdivision, e.g. Kullu District. Shown as plain text (not linked) and stored as Has admin 2, split on a comma and a space in the same way as provinces. Give the title of the subdivision page, including any suffix such as "District".
admin_2_label
Label for the admin_2 row. Defaults to District; override it if a different administrative term applies (e.g. Tehsil, Regency).
coordinates
Decimal latitude, then longitude, separated by a comma. Used for the map's centre, for the displayed value and for Has coordinates. Format: 32.064, 77.265.

Landscape

minimum_elevation
maximum_elevation
Elevation in metres, as a plain number: 2400, not 2,400 and not 2400 m. The template adds the thousands separator and the unit itself. With both values the row reads "2,400–3,718 m"; with only one, "From 2,400 m" or "Up to 3,718 m". Stored as Has minimum elevation and Has maximum elevation.
area_extent
Area in km², as a plain number: 10.87, not 10.87 km². The template adds the unit. Stored as Has area extent. Use the area_km2 figure of the page's entry in Module:Boundaries so that the infobox and the polygon agree; the module does not store its area anywhere the infobox can read, so the figure has to be copied by hand when a polygon is redrawn.
terrain
Short prose description.

Climate

climate
Climate type, e.g. Temperate montane. Shown in the "Climate Type" row.
minimum_rainfall
maximum_rainfall
Annual rainfall in millimetres, as a plain number (1800). The row is built the same way as the elevation row, with "mm" as the unit. Stored as Has minimum rainfall and Has maximum rainfall.
seasons
Wet/dry season descriptor or growing season window.

Growing status

Optional. Leave growing_status blank and the infobox shows, stores and categorises nothing extra.

Parameter What to enter Stored as
growing_status Active, Historical or No longer grown. Shows as a badge under the title. Has growing status
first_grown The earliest year a cited source records cannabis grown here, as four digits, then its citation: 1839<ref name="…"/>. Used with Historical and No longer grown. Has first grown (the year only)
last_grown The latest year a cited source records cannabis grown here (for No longer grown, the year growing ended), as four digits, then its citation: 1987<ref name="…"/>. Used with Historical and No longer grown. Has last grown (the year only)
reason_stopped One or more of Banned, Eradication, No longer profitable, Replaced by another crop, Unknown, separated by commas. Used only with No longer grown. Has reason stopped
historical_names Names the sources used for the place. Shown only. (not stored)
  • Active: sources dated 2000 or later show cannabis grown here. The note beside the badge gives the latest year of a dated accession filed here, or "Grown here in 2000 or later" when there is none.
  • Historical: the sources date from before 2000. This makes no claim that growing stopped. The note beside the badge gives the year from last_grown ("Cannabis last recorded here in 1894"), or "Grown here in the past" when that field is blank.
  • No longer grown: a cited source says growing here ended. A lack of sources dated 2000 or later is not enough. The note beside the badge gives the year from last_grown ("Growing ended in 1987"), or "Sources say growing here has ended" when that field is blank.

Eradication is a reason growing stopped, not a status: a place that keeps growing under eradication campaigns stays Active.

For a Historical or No longer grown place, first_grown and last_grown show as one row, Grown: 1839–1987 when both are filled, from 1839 or until 1987 when only one is. Enter only years a source gives. Do not copy in the dates of accessions or news reports, which the infobox shows in rows of their own. A value that does not start with a four-digit year (such as "the 1980s") is shown but not stored.

With a status set, the infobox also shows the years of the earliest and latest dated accessions filed here. These are worked out from those pages each time, not stored.

The template adds Category:Historical Appellations for Historical and Category:Former Appellations for No longer grown.

Numbers: plain digits only

minimum_elevation, maximum_elevation, area_extent, minimum_rainfall and maximum_rainfall are passed straight into {{formatnum:}}. Write digits (with a decimal point if needed) and nothing else: no thousands separator, no unit, no "~" or "c.". A value such as 2,300 displays exactly like 2300, but it files the page in Category:Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. A unit typed into the field is also doubled in the stored value, because the template appends the unit before storing it.

Map

boundary_key
Read by Module:Boundaries, not by the template itself, which is why it is not in the blank template above. Only needed when the page's polygon is filed in the module under a title other than the page's own. When empty, the module uses the page name.

Example

The infobox of Nirang (appellation) as of revision 20414:

{{Infobox Appellation
|appellation_name = Nirang
|other_names =
|image =
|image_caption =
|gene_pool = South Asian Gene Pool
|regional_complex = Hindu Kush-Himalayan
|growing_region = Western Himalayas
|growing_area = Malana Valley
|country = India
|provinces = Himachal Pradesh
|admin_2 = Kullu District
|admin_2_label = District
|coordinates = 32.064, 77.265
|minimum_elevation = 2400
|maximum_elevation = 3718
|area_extent = 10.87
|terrain = Steep glacial valley with terraced fields
|climate = Temperate montane
|seasons =
}}

It renders Elevation "2,400–3,718 m" and Area "10.87 km²". The page stores Has admin 2 = Kullu District and Has province = Himachal Pradesh. It is filed in Category:Appellations and Category:Kullu District.

Categories

The infobox files every page in Category:Appellations and in one place category, the first of these that is filled: admin_2, then provinces, then country. A page with neither admin field lands in its country's category. The category takes the whole field, so a field holding two comma-separated values produces one category named after both. Do not add these categories to the page by hand. A Historical appellation is also filed in Category:Historical Appellations, and one no longer grown in Category:Former Appellations.

Boundary registration

To add or update the polygon for an appellation, edit Module:Boundaries directly. The key in the module must match the page name exactly, including the "(appellation)" suffix, unless the page sets boundary_key. The infobox will pick up the polygon on the next page parse.

If the polygon does not appear after registration, null-edit or purge the page. Otherwise wait for the SMW job queue to catch up.

Map behaviour

The map is always shown. It is centred on coordinates, draws the polygon from Module:Boundaries and places a pin for each accession found by [[Category:Accessions]][[Has appellation::{{PAGENAME}}]]. An accession therefore appears only when its Has appellation value is this page's full title, suffix included.
