Evidentiary scope

The form places the plant at the Side of field on the bank of the Mekong in October 1937, and notes it as Common. It gives no use. A field margin is outside the crop. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (PE 00578084, 1,080 × 1,440 pixels; PE 00578085, 1,055 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (both sheets; printed FAN MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY / FLORA OF YUNNAN, by hand): Field No. 7817 / Date Oct. 30. 1937 / Locality Bank of Mekong River Chiapieh / Altitude 2000M / Habitat Side of field / Habit herb / Height 3 ft / Leaf dark green above whitish beneath / Flower green [·] ♀ / Notes Common / Family Moraceae / Name Cannabis / Collector T. T. Yü (cut after the T on PE 00578084).
  • Packet (glassine): T.T.Yu 7817. Tag (round, printed): F. I. B. / YUNNAN EXP. / Coll. T. T. Yü / No. 7817 (red).
  • Determination slip (both sheets): Cannabis sativa L. / 定名人 關克儉 1956年1月27日.
  • YUNNAN province stamp; stamped number 340541 on both sheets.

The two readings agree. One reads the locality's first word as Banks and the signs after green as ♂ ♀, and marks Chiapieh uncertain.

  • Kunming sheet (KUN 0169109), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (KUN 0169109, 959 × 1,440 pixels). Form (printed 中國科學院植物分類研究所昆明工作站 / 雲南植物, filled in by hand in English): 採集號數 7817 / 日期 Oct. 30, 193[7] (the last figure overwritten) / 產地 Bank of mekong River / chiapieh / 海拔高度 2000 m / 環境 side of field / 習性 herb / 體高 3 ft / 葉 dark green above whitish / 花 beneath green ♀ (the leaf entry runs on into the flower line) / 其他 common / 科名 moraceae / 學名 cannabis / 採集人 T. T. Yu. Round tag (printed, number in red): F. I. B. / YUNNAN EXP. / COLL. T. T. YÜ / No. 7817. Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / 定名人, a cursive name not read with confidence / 1959年 and a month. Round stamp of the Kunming Work Station; KUN No. 0525315; a blank paper packet. The readings agree on the number, the tag, the altitude, the height and the notes; one reads several handwritten words differently (chiapick, funbel, bnb), where the other, and the Beijing forms, read chiapieh, field and herb.

Georeferencing

Chiapieh is read as Jiabi (佳碧), a hamlet of Yunling township in Deqin County: by sound only (Chia-pi in Wade-Giles), and no source read gives the label's spelling. The point 28.34, 98.88 is the hamlet's place node in OpenStreetMap (node 13169137974). SRTM gives 2,241 m there against the label's 2,000 m, so the bank lay some 240 m below the hamlet, toward the river. The point stands for the hamlet and the slopes below it, not the spot where the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Editorial treatment

Three sheets, one accession. The Beijing sheets share the form's wording, the packet, the tag and the stamped number; the Kunming sheet carries the same tag and a later form copying the same entries. The repository and catalogue number are PE 00578084's.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's T. T. Yü. He is Yü Te-tsun (俞德浚, 1908–1986): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and notes that he collected extensively in Yunnan and Sichuan, and Chinese Wikipedia gives T.T.Yu as his standard form. The prose links Yü Te-tsun.

Determination. The 1956 slip is signed 關克儉 in characters, and the identified-by field takes the name as written.

Elevation. The elevation field stores the form's 2,000 m.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The Kunming form shows the female sign alone after the flower colour; the Beijing forms read green followed by a sign, read once as ♀ and once as ♂ ♀.
