Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The slip gives the province, the collector, the number and the date; the rest of its text, which may give a place and a habitat, could not be read. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00578014, 1,004 × 1,440 pixels).
- Slip (by hand, on a printed label of the Herbarium of Biological Laboratory, The Science Society of China, Nanking, stamped): 四川[·][·]、[·][·][·][·][·]。[·]、[·][·][·] (place and note, cursive; perhaps 峨眉 … 山坡 … 花淡黃色, all uncertain) / 姚仲吾 / #4477號 / 1939年5月8日.
- Tags. One in pencil, C.W.Yao[?] / 4477; a second card tag with a number and a name not read with confidence.
- Determination slip. Cannabis sativa Linn. / Determinavit Y. Liu 1954.
- SZECHUAN province stamp; stamped number 213876; pencil 27. Newsprint shows through the mounting paper.
The readings agree on 四川, the determination and the stamps. They differ on the rest of the slip: one reads the place as 四川: 成都 with a slope and pale yellow flowers, uncertain, the other as perhaps 峨眉, also uncertain; one reads the number as 44773 and the date as 1939, month not read, day 8, all uncertain.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The slip's place is written in cursive characters, and the two readings agree only on its first two, 四川 (Szechwan). One reading took the next characters as 成都 (Chengdu) and the other as perhaps 峨眉 (Omei), neither with confidence, so no place below the province is used. The province field takes Sichuan.
Editorial treatment
Collector and title. The collector field takes 姚仲吾 as the slip writes it, and the title romanises the surname as Yao. No source on him was found, and the name is not linked. The tag's initials, read as C. W. Yao, are uncertain.
Date. The slip gives 8 May 1939, which is stored; the catalogue also gives 1939.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
