Discussion

Sources

  • Geography. The area, rivers, 1995 listing and forest cover of the Lunugamvehera reserve are from Mendis (2024), who takes them from the Department of Wildlife Conservation's management plan of 1998, and who calls the park "now renamed Yala Block VI". No source read gives the area or gazettement year of Yala National Park or an elevation for the reserves.
  • Climate. The rainfall and season figures are national or coastal (the 2020 National Drought Plan; Hambantota station). No station inside the growing area was found.
  • Demography. Census 2012 figures are from the Department of Census and Statistics' divisional tables, read as the web tables flatten them; only the totals and the Sinhalese and Buddhist majorities are used.
  • Enforcement. Each raid is from a news report, and the district arrest figures from map 3 of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board's handbook for 2025.
  • Accessions. The collection details are from the collector's documentation and travelogue, attributed in the article.

Where the sources disagree

  • Lunugamvehera and Lunugamwehera. The park's name and Mendis (2024) use the first spelling; the 2015 and 2024 Sunday Times reports use the second for the forest reserve and the police station. The article keeps each report's spelling where it names the reserve or the police.
  • Plant counts in February 2025. The headline of the Newswire report says over 200,000 plants; its text gives 203,500 and 153,850 plants for the Buttala camp's raid in Zone 04 and 9,500 for the Lahugala camp's.

Sources not used

  • The December 2023 Pilimagala raid is reported through a PressReader page that would not load as text.
  • The March 2026 Kebilitta report on the police website returned "not found" on 17 October 2026, so the area's relation to Kotiyagala is not described.
  • The Sunday Times report of February 2024 gives an activist's figures (50 to 60 plantations; about 200 acres affected); the article reports the plantation figure only as his claim.
