Evidentiary scope

The labels give the place outside the gate, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (NAS00290134, 954 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290142, 963 × 1,440 pixels).

  • NAS00290134 (printed 國立中央研究院植物研究所標本室 / HERBARIUM OF THE INSTITUTE OF BOTANY, ACADEMIA SINICA, by hand): Cannabis sativa L. / Locality Peiping / Notes 東便门外 / Coll. by Y. Yabe (the initial written like an X) / Jun. 10, 1945 / Det. by and Date blank. HOPEH province stamp; East China station stamp; red 089238.
  • NAS00290142: the same label and entries (Cannabis sativa, L.), with a red star sticker. HOPEH province stamp; East China station stamp; red 089223.

The two readings agree, and both read the year as 1945: its third digit is angular, unlike the round 0 of the day. One reading marks the initial on NAS00290134 uncertain.

Georeferencing

Peiping (北平) was the name of Beijing from 1928 to 1949 (Wikidata Q17579219). 東便门 is Dongbianmen (東便門), one of the seven gates of the outer city of Beijing, at its north-eastern corner; its gate tower was pulled down in 1958 when Beijing railway station was built (Chinese Wikipedia). The point 39.90, 116.44 is Wikidata's point for the gate (Q10869448, a city gate); the features OpenStreetMap names 东便门 lie within about 1 km of it. The label puts the plant outside the gate without saying how far, so the point stands for the ground just outside the gate, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Editorial treatment

Two sheets, one accession. The sheets carry the same label with the same place, collector and date. The repository and catalogue number are NAS00290134's.

Date. Both labels read Jun. 10, 1945; 10 June 1945 is stored, and the title takes 1945. The catalogue's 1905 appears on neither sheet.

Collector. The collector field keeps the labels' Y. Yabe. The botanist the Harvard botanist index and Japanese Wikipedia give as Y. Yabe, Yabe Yoshitada (矢部吉禎), taught in Peking from 1904 to 1909 and died on 23 August 1931, so he cannot have gathered a plant in 1945. The catalogue's 1905 falls within his Peking years, but it is on neither sheet. The labels' Y. Yabe is not identified by any source found, and the name is not linked.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue dates both sheets 1905; both labels read Jun. 10, 1945.
