Discussion
Evidentiary scope
This is a sample of a prepared drug, presented by a donor, and not a field gathering. It has a donor and a place name and no collector, number or date. It documents ganja from India reaching a Swedish collection, at a date the catalogue does not give. It shows no continuing population, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification; the accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
The sample has not been seen. The text is the museum's catalogue transcription, read on 11 October 2026. The catalogue lists no image, and GBIF's copy (occurrence 1096708678) carries no media.
- pr. can be read in two ways: as the Latin prope, "near", its usual sense on herbarium labels, or as the commercial per, "by way of". The label does not expand it, and the page does not choose between them.
- Örtstånd is left untranslated in the article; the catalogue's own English note gives Infrutescence.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label names Calcutta for a sample of ganja, a drug prepared from harvested plants and presented by a donor, and its pr. can mean either "near" or "by way of". Under either reading it names the place the sample came from or passed through. It does not say where the plants were grown, and the catalogue gives no other place, so a point at Calcutta would put the growing at a city the label may name only as the sample's route.
Editorial treatment
Page type. The sample is plant material, a dried fruiting head, so it is an accession and not a made object.
Title. Herbarium accessions take the collector's name. The catalogue names no collector for this sample, so the title takes the name on its label, Warrington's, with s.n. and s.d..
Collector. The collector field is empty, as it is in the catalogue: the label says that Warrington presented the sample, not that he gathered it. Who Mr Warrington was is not established, and no page names him further.
Country and province. India and West Bengal are the catalogue's values; its country value reads India (excl. Jammu and Kashmir). The province comes from the catalogue, not from an identification of where the plants grew. The locality field gives the city the label names.
Date. None is given. The catalogue entry was created on 9 February 2009, which is when the sample was catalogued, not when it was made or given.
Source discrepancies
- GBIF's copy gives the province, West Bengal, and no country; the museum's catalogue gives India.
