Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The labels give the city, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00777344, 1,042 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Label (printed 國立北平研究院植物學研究所標本室贈 / DISTRIBUTED FROM / HERBARIUM OF INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING, CHINA, typed, faint): Cannabis sativa L. (the genus underlined in pencil) / Loc. Peiping / Coll. S.[T?].Wang / Field No. 234 / Date Aug. 1[0?],1935 / Det. by H.W.[K?]ung.
  • Herbarium stamp of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences; stamped number 0601355; pencil 27.

The readings agree on the place, the number and the month. Both mark the collector's middle initial uncertain, both read the day as 10 with doubt, and they differ on the determiner, read once as H. W. Kung and once as H. W. Wang, both uncertain.

  • BNU 0036661 (BNU 0036661), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (BNU 0036661, 1,000 × 1,425 pixels). Label (printed 國立北平研究院植物學研究所標本室贈 / DISTRIBUTED FROM / HERBARIUM OF INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING, CHINA., typed, clear): Cannabis sativa L. with 大麻 and the male sign by hand / Loc. Peiping / Coll. S.T.Wang / Field No. 234 / Det. by H.W.Kung / Date Aug. 16,1935. Stamped number 006371; a faded red oval stamp, not read; pencil Can. Barcode 北京师范大学生科院植物标本馆 (BNU). The readings agree.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Peiping (北平) was the name of Beijing from 1928 to 1949, when the city was a special municipality (Wikidata Q17579219); the label names the city and no place in or around it. No source read gives the extent of the municipality of 1935, so no point can carry an honest distance, and the centre of present-day Beijing would stand for none of the ground the city then covered. The province field takes Beijing.

Editorial treatment

Date. Both readings of the Beijing label give the day as 10, with doubt. The label on BNU 0036661 carries the same typed text, clear, and both readings of it give Aug. 16,1935: 16 August 1935 is stored.

Collector. The collector field takes S. T. Wang, the catalogue's form, which both readings of the Beijing label support with a faint middle initial and the label on BNU 0036661 gives clearly, S.T.Wang. No source on him was found, and the name is not linked.

Determination. The determiner's surname on the Beijing label was read as Kung and as Wang, both uncertain. The label on BNU 0036661 reads Det. by H.W.Kung clearly in both readings, and the identified-by field takes H. W. Kung.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Beijing Normal University sheets carry the same typed distribution label. A third copy of the label, with the same typed text, is pasted on a sheet of the Institute of Applied Ecology, Shenyang (IFP 03802001x0003), beside J. Sato's slip no. 8108 for a female plant; nothing on that sheet ties its plant to this gathering, and it is not counted here (see Sato 8108 (1936)). The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • Both readings of the Beijing label give the day as 10, with doubt; the label on BNU 0036661 reads 16.
