Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The form gives the habitat 栽培 (cultivated) at a place in Kansu, at 2,200 m, in August 1942: the plant was taken from a crop. It names no use and no seed origin. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1942. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (WUK0069241, 990 × 1,440 pixels).
Cannabis sativa, written small.
- Tags: two, tied to the stems, each 13459.
- Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit 傅坤俊 (stamped).
- Stamps: the stamped sheet number; 标本已录 (specimen recorded); the round stamp of the herbarium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Northwest Institute of Biology and Soil (中国科学院 西北生物土壤研究所 植物标本室).
The readings agree on the collector, the number, the date, the habitat, the altitude and the first two characters of the place, 甘肅. Both read the next three characters as 涇原陶, each uncertain. One reading allows 1943 for the year and 3,200 m for the altitude, the figures being small and fused, and leaves the last two characters of the determiner's stamp uncertain. One describes the tops as female, the other as male.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The place after 甘肅 was read twice as 涇原陶山, every character after 甘肅 uncertain. No place called 陶山 (or 淘山, 匋山) was found in Gansu or Ningxia, in OpenStreetMap or in Wikidata. 涇原 was not the name of a county in 1942: it was the name of a Tang circuit, and the county now called Jingyuan (泾源, in Ningxia) was Huaping County (化平縣), Gansu, from 1913 to 1950 (Chinese Wikipedia). The places that match by sound, a village called 桃山 in Longde County and a peak called 桃木山 in Jingyuan County, are written with other characters. The province field takes Gansu, from the form's 甘肅.
Editorial treatment
Classification. The form's 栽培 says the plant was cultivated; the habitat line names no garden or institution, and the page takes the plant as a crop of the place.
Collector. The collector field keeps the form's 王作賓 (Wang Tso-pin in the romanisation of the time; pinyin Wang Zuobin), and the title takes the surname as Wang. The Harvard botanist index lists a Wang Tso-Pin, born in 1904, with the label form T. P. Wang. Hu Zonggang's history of Chinese botany to 1950 (Biodiversity Science, 2025) names 王作宾 among the collectors of the Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Peiping from 1929, and among its staff at Wugong, Shaanxi, after 1937. No source read gives the two forms of the name together, or a journey to Kansu in 1942, and the name is not linked.
Determination. The identified-by field takes the slip's stamped 傅坤俊, read with confidence in one reading and faint in the other. He is Fu Kun-tsun (born 1912), as on Fu 1897 (1937), whom Hu Zonggang's history also names among the staff at Wugong; the prose links Fu Kun-tsun.
Locality. The locality field is left empty: the characters after the province were not read with confidence.
Date and elevation. The form gives 10 August 1942 and 2,200 m, as stored; one reading allows 1943 and 3,200 m. The form is printed for the Chinese Academy of Sciences, founded in 1949, so its entries were written at least seven years after the date they give.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium places the sheet in Ningxia, and its second listing (record be21c694) in Gansu; the form reads 甘肅 (Kansu).
