Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The Wallich lot documents Cannabis from the Calcutta botanic garden by the summer of 1832. It carries no date, seed source, use or name. The other pieces on the sheet carry no lot number. The accession is classified Other, as is the other garden-grown sheet, Buchanan-Hamilton 2182 (1815). It does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00248608, 2985 × 4096 pixels).

  • Stamps, top right: an embossed oval with UNIVERSITY and GLASGOW legible, and a black GL.
  • Lower right, beside one stem: Cannabis sativa / E.I.C. / Wall. L. n. 4665. F. The letter is a barred capital followed by a full stop. The same hand writes a rounded capital E in E.I.C., so the letter is read as F.
  • Lower left, under the tall stem: Canabis sativa / Brod. & R. Herb. (second line uncertain).

Georeferencing

The lot's source in the list is the Calcutta botanic garden. The location fields follow Buchanan-Hamilton 2182, another sheet grown in the same garden: the garden's present name, Howrah District, West Bengal, and the same point, 22.56, 88.29, which stands for the garden, not for a bed within it.

Editorial treatment

The title follows the way Wallich lots are cited, by Wallich's name, the entry number and the lot letter, in the (by <year>) form used for sheets with no date. The year is the end of the list's main distribution in the summer of 1832, which included page 166. The collector field is left empty: the lot's source in the list is the garden, not a collector.

The expansion of HBC, Hortus Botanicus Calcutta, is from Sanoj, Sabu and Pradeep (2013). The online Wallich Catalogue prints the abbreviation without expanding it.

Source discrepancies

  • Distribution dates. The front page of the online Wallich Catalogue says the specimens were distributed between 1829 and 1847. The same institution's account of the project says the distribution resumed in 1847 and was completed in November 1849. Neither date is used here.
  • Catalogue. Edinburgh's catalogue and GBIF give the country only. The sheet's Wallich reference is not in either.
