Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The sheet documents Cannabis in the East India Company's herbarium by the summer of 1832, from a lot the list attributes to a herbarium called Russel. It carries no place, date, habitat or use. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from Kew's image (7142 × 10248 pixels). Both readings agree: a printed box 4665.C, pencil 4665. at the lower left and pencil XXII. No collector's slip is visible.
Georeferencing
No point is given. Nothing below the country is named: the lot names a source herbarium, not a place, and the sheet carries no slip. The country field takes India, the country of the Company's list, as on the live lot E.
Editorial treatment
Title. The title follows the live Wallich lots, Wallich 4665E (by 1832) and Wallich 4665F (by 1832): Wallich's name, the entry number and the lot letter. The year is the end of the list's main distribution, in the summer of 1832, which included page 166.
Russel. The collector field is left empty: the list names a herbarium, not a collector. Russel is most likely Patrick Russell (1726–1805), naturalist to the Company at Madras from 1785 until he left India in 1791 (English Wikipedia), whose successor at Madras was Roxburgh; nothing on the sheet or in the list says so, and the page does not identify him.
Source discrepancies
- The master slip on the lot A sheet gives lot C's line in a hand that one reading took as Rapel and the other as Nepal. The Wallich Catalogue Online prints Russel, and the page follows it.
