Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on twenty-eight herbarium sheets of plants grown in Mississippi from seed whose labels give Afghanistan as its origin. They show that seed said to be Afghan was grown there; they do not show where in Afghanistan the seed was gathered, who supplied it or how it reached the university. No surviving seed of the lot has been traced. The page therefore carries no locality, coordinates, classification or conservation priority.
Identifier
The identifier UMS-AFG-UNK-0019720002 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence.
UMSstands for the University of Mississippi, which grew the lot.AFGis the ISO code for Afghanistan, the recorded seed origin.UNK: no province is recorded.- Month
00: the date the seed was gathered is unknown. - Year 1972 is the year of the earliest dated sheet of the lot. The seed had reached the university by then; the year is not a collection date.
Lineage
The labels call Af B the second seed lot and give no generation, so the sourcing type is Unknown provenance and no parent accession is set. The Afghan lots are linked as related accessions.
One sheet, 00947914 (plant 53 B), gives the code AF B but reads first seed lot. Twelve sheets coded Af A read second seed lot (see the Talk page of UMS-AFG-UNK-0019720001). Sheet 00947914 is placed here, under the code written on it. Every other sheet numbered 53 reads second seed lot; the labels do not show which part of the reading is in error.
Harvard transcribes the code on sheet 00429199 (plant 53 S) as ad b. It is placed here: the rest of its label reads Afghanistan, second seed lot, the words of Af B, and the wiki reads ad b as a slip for af b. The page quotes the transcription unchanged.
In 1971 M. W. Quimby gathered two sheets coded af-b (UMS-AFG-UNK-0019710001). They are a separate accession: no label says whether the 1971 and 1972 plants grew from the same seed.
The university's history names Afghanistan among the origins of the seed sown in 1968. No label or source read so far ties that seed to this lot, or says when or where in Afghanistan the seed was gathered.
Location and georeferencing
The country field gives the recorded seed origin, Afghanistan, not the place where the plants grew. The grow-out at University, Mississippi, is stated in the article. No coordinate is given and the map is off: a point in Mississippi would misplace Afghan seed, and no place in Afghanistan is recorded.
Harvard's index files eleven of the sheets (00429212, 00429214, 00429215, 00429216, 00429217, 00429218, 00429219, 00429220, 00429221, 00429222 and 00429223) under the state of Louisiana, although their locality reads University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. The article follows the label.
Dates
The collection date is left empty because the date the seed was gathered is unknown. The sheets are dated 31 July to 1 August 1972, a range across two months, so the sample harvest date is stored as the year. Nine labels read Planted 1 Aug. 1972. That is the last day of the visit to which the sheets are dated, so the reading conflicts with the sheet dates; the page quotes it as transcribed and does not enter it as a planting date.
Plant numbers
Each numbered 1972 sheet of the lot carries a number of the form 53 AA: a figure shared by every numbered sheet of the lot (53), then one or two letters for the plant. The figure may be a plot or row number, but no label says so, and the article does not call it one.
- Two plant numbers have two sheets each: 53 Z and 53 b.
- One number is transcribed with a hyphen, 53-o.
Label reading
The sheets have not been seen. The label text above is Harvard's transcription in its specimen index (read on 12 October 2026), where the lot code is in the remarks field. Harvard has published no image of any sheet of the lot.
- Harvard transcribes the code as AF B, Af B, ad b and af b; the page writes Af B.
- The collector field lists the three collectors as Harvard credits them. T. E. Lockwood is Tommie Earl Lockwood (1941–1975) in Harvard's botanist index.
- Sheet 00947914 carries a second determination, also as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica, by K. K. McDonnell (May 2000). An annotation records that the sheet was used in the Economic Botany teaching collection and returned to the herbarium in May 2000.

M. W. Quimby, N. J. Doorenbos, C. E. Turner and A. Masoud described the cultivation and the morphological variation of Mississippi-grown cannabis in Economic Botany 27 (1973): 117–127 (doi:10.1007/BF02862224). The paper may identify the seed sources and explain the lot codes. It has not been read for this page, and nothing here depends on it.
