Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The field label places the plant In open places, cultivated for its fiber at Pumei, Tsehheng, in November 1930, and a second label gives a local name beginning 麻 (ma, hemp). Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in in 1930. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (PE 00578057, 1,001 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290028, 1,007 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290029, 994 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field label (NAS00290029; printed 國立中央研究院自然歷史博物館植物標本室 / Herbarium of the Metropolitan Museum of Natural History, Academia Sinica, Nanking, China. / 中國貴州植物 / FLORA OF KWEICHOW, typed): Locality Pumei, Tsehheng / Habitat In open places, cultivated for its fiber / Habit large shrub / Height -10ft / D.B.H. 1in. / Leaf Deep dull green above, pale green beneath / Flower Reddish white / Fruit Yellow / Coll. Y. Tsiang No. 9255 / Date November 6, 1930.
  • Determination labels (both Nanjing sheets; same museum, typed): CANNABIS SATIVA Linn. (L. on NAS00290028) / Locality Tsehheng (Tseh-heng on NAS00290028) / Det. by H. Handel-Mazzetti / Coll. Y. Tsiang 9255 / Date Nov. 6, 1930. On NAS00290028, a line in ink above Locality: 土名麻[·].
  • Fan Memorial Institute label (PE 00578057): Herb. No. 20639 (red) / Fd. No. 9255 / Cannabis sativa L. / Collector Y.Tsiang / Loc. Kweichow / Determined by W.[·].Hsia / Date 1930.
  • Tags No. 9255 on each sheet. KWEICHOW province stamps.

The two readings agree on the typed text. The ink line on NAS00290028 was read once as 大石 followed by three characters not read, and once as 土名麻 with a fourth character not read; the page gives only 土名 and 麻, and stores no local name.

Georeferencing

Tsehheng is read as Ceheng County (册亨县), in the south-west of Guizhou, and Pumei as Pomei (坡妹镇), a town of that county. Both rest on the sound of the names and on the label's Kweichow; no source read gives either spelling, and no other Pumei or Pomei was found in Guizhou. The point 25.25, 105.66 is Pomei's place node in OpenStreetMap (node 4273911120); SRTM gives 953 m there, and the label gives no altitude. Wikidata gives the town (Q10928760) a second point about 13 km away. The point stands for the town and its surroundings, not a spot within them. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.

Editorial treatment

Three sheets, one accession. The three sheets share the number, date and collector; the field label is on NAS00290029. The repository and catalogue number are Beijing's.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's Y. Tsiang. He is Tsiang Ying (蒋英, 1898–1982), as on Tsiang 7431 (1930), gathered at Anlung three weeks earlier; the prose links that form.

Determination. The Nanjing labels name H. Handel-Mazzetti, and the Beijing label a Hsia whose second initial was not read; the identified-by field takes Handel-Mazzetti.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
