Evidentiary scope

The label gives the locality as Ranipauwa, N. of Beni (Ranipauwa, north of Beni), an elevation of 3,500 feet and the date 23 May 1954. The collectors are Stainton, Sykes and Williams, under the number 586. Its field note reads In field. Height 4 ft. Flowers green., which describes a plant about 1.2 m tall standing in a field, in flower. The words fit a cannabis crop and a weed in some other crop, and they do not say which, so the sheet does not establish cultivation. It records no local variety name, preparation or use. The accession is classified Unknown. No conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

The label gives no coordinates, and three Nepalese places are mapped as Ranipauwa. One stands in Raghuganga, Myagdi District, about 4 km north of Beni. The second lies at Muktinath in Mustang District, some 50 km further north and far above the label's elevation. The third lies at Kakani in Nuwakot District, Bagmati Province, in a different river system altogether. Only the Raghuganga settlement answers to the label's N. of Beni, and the point 28.38, 83.57 is that hamlet, Rānīpauwa, OpenStreetMap node 3480341500, taken as a locality approximation rather than as a reconstructed collection point. SRTM puts it at 1,148 metres against the label's 3,500 feet, about 1,067 metres. An earlier version of this note gave the point at five decimal places, a precision the identification does not have. The uncertainty allows about 1 km for the hamlet and its fields and 1 km for the rounding of the point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
